Keeps dropping and FW update doesn't take affect
« on: December 08, 2011, 12:22:48 AM »

Hi,
I have had my DIR-655 for a few years now and it has been running fine up until a few months ago.

I haven't changed any features or done some major changes but it started cutting out all network traffic. WiFi drops internet connection but is still connected and both my NAS and my wired computer are also cut off from the network but shows as connected.

The router GUI is not accessible when this happens. The routers leds are lit but for some reason all network activity is dropped. Restarting the router resets everything.

This is rather sporadic but happens at least 2 times a day.

I have disconnected the internet connection and left the "internal" network be up and running and then too I get the network "cut-off" after some time so it is not dependent on my ISP.

I have followed the suggestions made in other threads by FurryNutz but to no avail.

I have Hardware Version A2 and am running Firmware Version 1.32NA. I tried to install the 1.35NA and it goes and does something but when it comes back it is still on 1.32NA so the FW upgrade doesn't kick in. Is my hardware too old for it possibly?

The router becomes quite hot but so did my previous D-Link router so I am not too worried about it.

Any suggestions welcome!

Regards,
Anders

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Always go to the DLink web site for FW updates.
Please review the FW Update sticky. If you've disconnected from the ISP modem and your still seeing a problem, kind of sounds like FW update might be needed. Then test again.

Keep us posted.

Need any help, Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Hi, thanks m8!

If you read the post you will see that I have the same issues even with my ISP disconnected. But it is a fibre-channel connection entering my house and there is only a fibre-channel->LAN converter before the router.

As described I found all your points in other posts here on teh forum and tried those about two weeks ago, i.e. the "Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in" and so forth...

I did try with both G and N WiFi but as my wired NAS and server is also cut off at teh same time it doesn't matter which is used.

I do have a cordless phone but as I live in Sweden (Europe) we don't use the 2.4GHz frequency and again it also affects the wired connections.

As for FW update, again, as described in the original post I tried to apply 1.35NA but when the router "wakes up" again it says that 1.32NA is still the active FW.

Any other pointers or is it time for it to end up at the recycling station and then go buy a Netgear?

Regards,
Anders

Please review the FW Update Sticky on FW updates please.

if your applying the FW update and it's still not reporting the new version, means the process is not working to apply the new FW files.

Also try using a different browser when updating FW. Try Opera or FF.
What browser are you using now?

I installed 1.35NA firmware on that exact model and rev level just a couple of days ago. It seems to be working OK. One little bug I found but not serious.

One assumes that you have adequate ventilation on the router and it isn't overheating?

I read elsewhere that when you are updating firmware that you should plug the PC into the #1 jack, and disconnect all  others. That way the router has nothing else to do and can't get "distracted" during the firmware update.

Another possible would be if the little power supply wall-wart was going bad and not giving you the proper voltage. If you have a way to check that it would be nice to eliminate the possibility.

I have a hunch you should save your pennies and watch for sales on gigabit routers.  :(

I have exactly the same problem. My DI655 has 1.32NA

Wired and wireless connections get broken several times a day. I am wired and my streaming videos stop with a CONNECTION BROKEN given by the website. No tool tray popup.

No WARNings are posted in the log file, other than handing out addresses to computers
I downloaded and tried installing FW 1.35
The first couple times I get UPLOAD SUCCEEDED page, but after the 80 second install countdown no changes have been made, the FW is still at 1.32NA and SecureSpot is still there. I tried Chrome, Fifefox and IE 8 (32 bit). None of them worked.

I saw the message on a forum about having to put the bin file in C:\fakepath\ because the update routine expects to find something there, so I tried that twice and still nothing works.

I have not been doing a factory reset before or after FW update is this what is causing my problem ???

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.
