Wireless dropouts
« on: December 31, 2011, 10:40:37 PM »

I know this is a fairly common issue with this router, I've read through the forums for a while since I first got the router back in summer and think I've gone through every fix for this but I still get random wireless disconnects with my router.

I'm on firmware 1.23, version A2, Wireless G & N mode, have tried with both just N and just G, 2.4ghz broadcast, no channel interference, wish disabled, auto channel width, WPA2-AES security..

Have 5 devices connect ever, never all at the same time, usually 3 max, 2 computers and a printer, and xbox/ps3. Disconnects happen most apparently while gaming (could just be because thats the only time I notice).

Any suggestions now would be great, been going on for months now and just frustrated with it.

Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Also it can be useful to know what nearby network channels are being used, I find in a somewhat crowded environment that using auto channel select gives me best overall performance, but using something like inSSIDer 2.0 to monitor channel usage might give you an idea of a consistently unused channel.  Or it might not be helpful at all...

Any cordless house phones? There is a cordless phone system, the base is a floor below the router with one phone upstairs in the room next to the router, one in my room at the opposite end of the house and also one close to the router. I thought it may have been interference before but I tried a day with the phone next to it unplugged and still had the issue.

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Only my network in range - Channel 2.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Short GI was off, will try with EWP off and post back..

What ISP Service do you have? Comcast cable
What ISP Modem do you have? stand alone router DGL-4500 Model A2, fw 1.23NA
What ISP Modem make and model do you have? Motorola SB5120

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
-Primary and Secondary both filled

Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
-Only Gamefuel I have is for Xbox which is always off while on computer but I'll disable and test out too.

Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
-Is unchecked
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
-is on
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
-This was done too
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
-Also had set already

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll do these couple changes and post back later today with results so far.

Are the cordless phones operating on a 2.4Ghz or near this frequency by chance?

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Yeah the phones are 2.4ghz which is what I thought is most likely to be the issue, I thought as long as there weren't directly near the router it'd be ok but I'm guessing it could still cause an issue?

So far with the few changes, I haven't had any full disconnects yet but I did see my wireless speed to the router drop from 54 mpbs (using an older wireless G adapter for now) down to 11mpbs and go up and down between 11-36mbps, and right now its staying at just 36mpbs.

I'd be up for anyone to check any settings through teamviewer if they want.

Thanks a lot for the help so far!

Seems to be when I'm on skype that the signal speed drops, I'm also usually on skype while gaming on my comp when I get the disconnects so could it be just skype destroying my bandwidth and dropping it?
