hello, some help needed please.

I have a home network and I routinely connect from my laptops to my wired desktop via Remote Desktop. Routinely, that is, until I replaced my old wireless router with a D-Link Wireless N router.

But now, after the change, I can no longer remote desktop in. I *am* able to ping and file share with that computer, just no remote desktop.

Can anyone help offer some insight on this?

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Don't forget that the router is serving ALL your computers and it needs to know how to route your request.  If you use the standard default port for RDP, then you MUST use port forwarding to route it to the specific computer.

I have multiple computers that I connect to, so I've assigned each computer its own custom port for RDP and then use port forwarding to route each port to its assigned computer via its pre-assigned/reserved IP so the router knows which computer to send the request to.

I don't know how you change the port number via a Windows UI but you can do it in the registry, e.g., the PortNumber value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\Wds\rdpwd\Tds\tcp.

Take note of the default port number as you'll ONLY want to change the values for what contains the default value.  You'll then need to reboot the computer when you've changed the values.  Use an available and custom port number for each computer you want to connect to via remote desktop and then set the port forwarding and you should be good to go.

IF he's on the LAN side, routing isn't needed, just needs to set up Reserved IP addressing on the router for ALL his devices. Ensure that the devices are set up for auto obtain IP addressing.

This is what I use here and it works.
