DNS-320 freezed
« on: December 28, 2011, 03:14:14 PM »

Hello,

I have just received my DNS-320. Everything seems to work fine except that the device crash every time I do a copy of a few files. It happens all the time.

I can still ping the device, the fan is on, the power and Right lights are on.
I can't access the website, the devise doesn't appears any more in my network.
After a hard reboot, the log doesn't provide any information.

I have windows 7 family premium 64bits. The firmware is the latest one: 2.0.2.
My only hard-drive is configured in a standard mode.

Have you got any idea what might be the problem?
Regards

Did you try copying files from another source (e.g. another computer) to rule out your PC as the cause?

Hi,
I am confused a bit.  You say after a hard reboot the log doesn't provide any information.  I am assuming you are talking about the 320's log.  If you cannot access the 320 via the web interface, how are you viewing the log?  If you can temporarily view the web interface after reboot, have you done the smart test or scanned the drive?   Have you looked at your router interface and see if the DHCP is giving the device a new IP assignment?  Is the ethernet connection directly to the router or through a switch?  When you say the 320 crashes, what exactly is happening?  Does the file transfer just stop and freeze, or do you get some "failure" notice?

Thanks for your replies. Here are the answers to your questions:

The 320 is connected directly to the router. I have assigned a fixed IP to the device, I am not using DHCP.

When this happened, I was copying files from one computer that is also linked to the same router. I have tried to access the nas through other devices without success. But as I said, I am still able to ping it and the router still see it connected.

The log that I am talking about are the NAS log. There is no problem with the NAS itself until I launch a copy. So I am able to access web interface without problem until what I think is a crash.

The symptom are the following:
* The file transfer stop saying the device is not accessible any more
* The NAS disappear from the network
* I am not able to access the web interface
* I can't access it through Upnp
* The fan is turning at its full speed but the hard drive doesn't have any activity
* The front button doesn't have any effect - I think it is possible to reboot the device using this button if we wait enough but I might be wrong.

I will try the smart test tonight and the copy from another computer.

regards

Hi again,
Thanks for the clarification.  When I first upgraded to 2.02, I discovered that several of the previous settings, although showing as enabled, needed to be re-saved and then rebooted to actually start functioning including the fan settings.  The UPNP server is still a bit buggy also, so I would also recommend a "refresh all" and then a shutdown and restart.  Things to check, hd temperature, smart test, try eliminating the hybernation settings, double check network "name" is the same on all computers and devices.
I am really mostly guessing, but it seems that the problem is either the 320 itself, or perhaps the network/ router settings.  Let us know if you find anything.  Good luck

I have changed the network name that was not the same in the NAS configuration and in my computers. I have reset most of the network settings in case the 2.0.2 upgrade has changed something.

It seems to have solved my issue. I have launched lots of copys, try to stress it a bit without a single problem.
I thank you a lot for your help.

A correction of the firmware to support the Itunes server protocol and my NAS will become the perfect toy :-)

Regards
