615 wireless disconnects
« on: December 21, 2011, 08:00:48 PM »

I’ve been at my present house, and using the same network for three years. I have two computers. Computer A is hardwired to a DIR-615. Computer B has a DWA-130. The 615 connects to a Motorola modem supplied by a cable company here in Hamilton, Ontario called MountainCable.
Never a problem until recently. Only upgrades have been software & nothing that should affect network.

Computer A, hardwired, has had no complaints.

Computer B user has been complaining of internet disconnects, timeouts, over the last month. Like back to dial-up modem days!!! This while using MS Explorer. Occurs during navigation of a site or request for a new tab. If user switches to mail service, MS Outlook is also timing out.

Shaw have recently taken over MoutainCable. I’ve talked to their tech support and they say there is no indication of dropouts or errors on my line/account. In fact they say connect is very clean.

I’ve upgraded taking my dir-615 B to 2.25.
Reloaded Motorola by shutting off on and several times.
Cleared 615 logs.

Still getting random timeouts. The blackouts last for several minutes.

How can I interpret logs to help figure this out ?

Thanks in advance

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

thanks for the help

After a stable period of 3 years I’ve developed a reliance on a truly affordable and effective, 365/24 hour uptime, internet connection. And I’ve had 100% amazing performance and reliability until now !

As explained :  615B 2.25 & cable supplier says they are clean

What wireless modes are you using?
In Setup, Device Info, Wireless Lan, I have Wireless Radio enabled, & Wi-Fi Protected Setup enabled.  More?

Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What menu?

What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.WPA/WPA2 - Personal

Any cordless house phones?
 Yes.
I can now see the 2.4 with much better discretion using InSSiDer.

Any other WiFi routers in the area?
See above. There doesn’t seem to be intersecting amplitudes. Is that good?

Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Did this

Looks like it’s my localized problem then it’s either software or hardware.

Hardware
   D-Link 130 card in computer B
   D-Link 615 router

Software
Computer B device driver level software(s)
Computer A flooding or B getting blocked for whatever?  – I can find no indication of these occurring using Task Manager.

The periods of timeouts on b are so long the user, me, moves on!! I’ve tried disconnecting & reconnecting of the usb network card, as well as reboots of b – thought I was chasing a reboot sequence on b but scenarios failed, no resolution, but problem belonging to b software or hardware nearly eliminated .

I’ll order a new usb card and router and troubleshoot hardware. My wife is getting an Ipad 2 from Santa. I guess it will want to talk too. Any anticipated problems? I’ll use a higher spec router if it might perform better. I’ve been happily PC, but now this is failing.

And the 615 router can’t self test or report problems of this nature it it’s log?

ps
Today I was a light user, with no problems. I started Insidder and I, b. locked up. Rebooted and back to ok. What did I learn/ I don’t know.

(close isn’t good enough)

Try single mode G or mixed G and N? Under Setup/networking

Some other things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

I'm sorry furrynutz but like my doctor's instructions I ignored a bunch. I didn't understand them, you failed to explain reasoning and didn't answer my queries. I know I'm a neophytpe.

My thoughts are I've changed nothing
I suspect yours are establish a proper baseline, and my ISP
say' 'not me'.

I've found a site www.videoeta' that quickly responds so I've opened another tab and monitored their feedback. Continue to troubleshoot.

Reboots seemed to help my problem, but not every time.

Now the disconnects aren't occurring but I'm getting messages from MS Outlook.

I have multiple e-mail accounts and Outlook starts up and polls them all. The last few days, after the disconnect stops, I've been getting a residual screen asking if an e-mail accounts password are ok.

The langoliers!

Were only here to help, you have asked for help in regards to this I presume. Maybe we have presumed to much. You can't treat these like a human condition and if you ignore some of the suggestions then I'll recommend you seek other help off this forum or contact D-Link support. If you seem to know whats best that thats your prerogative and nobody can help you here.

Others have found resolution here and do enjoy this router. It's a good router. However, you can lead a horse to water, can't make it drink.

Good luck.
