sorry to drag this back up...but with Christmas not far away the missus has started shopping.

i've suggested this to her for me
http://www.amazon.co.uk/APC-Back-Power-Saving-Outlet/dp/B002RXED6A/ref=dp_cp_ob_computers_title_1

it has a usb data control line, anyone know if the dns-320 would recognise it?

Sorry to open this topic again. But for those who are looking for some information on using UPS with this NAS.
I confirm support for Back-UPS CS 500 (no restart needed) but didn't test the NAS shutdown (had little time).
The DNS-320 can read status of UPS (battery charge percentage, ON LINE / ON BATTERY).
I'd very appreciate setting somewhere in menu the battery level to shutdown the NAS.
I will post further info when I get it.

Some months ago I asked the dlink support about an UPS support for DNS-320 and 325.
They told me that if there is an power outage the storage will remain working until the UPS battery has about 40-30% power left and then the HDDs will be safely unmounted but the unit itself will stay turned on until the UPS's battery goes completely down. By unmounting the HDDs there should be no problem for the HDDs and the data on them. If the power recovery option in DNS-320 is enabled then the unit should get back on as soon as the power supply is running again.

By the way dlink supports officially only 3 UPS. Check the bottom of this compat. list:

I've got DNS-320 and a Mustek PowerMust 600VA.
Also is recognized and can read status of UPS.
But once power is off, it will go down as UPS goes off (and receive a "system power failure" message in next power on).
