How to keep an eye on the 4500
« on: January 17, 2012, 07:48:26 AM »

The other night, I thought my ISP connection went the way of funk. Next morning, I called them again and they said the my area was still out of connection. *thought, this is kinda going on long* So next time I called I waited for a rep. We went through all the hoops, turns out my router took a crap. Reinstalling the firmware fixed it. This was only a few days ago. Is there a way to keep an eye on it to make sure it's running at it's max potential 24/7 + smoothly? The only thing I know would be to go to speedtest.net but that solution seems too full of variables to decided if the router needs to re-install the firmware again....

Thanks

You shouldn't have to re-install any FW to fix anything. Sounds like it might be environmental or external interferences that might be causing the router to stop working.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Remember after you do configuration to the router, save off the configuration to file for future needs. Should the router stop working for some reason, don't do a FW update, do a factory reset, then reload the config file and you'll be ready to go.

So the best thing to do would be Speedtest.net?

that response looks like a copy n paste response from a helpdesk

Yes initial could be a speed test. Also check the status page and logs of the router.

It's My help desk. I've compiled a list of questions and suggestions since finding that there are similarities and commonalities on these routers and people problems. These work for troubleshooting. Highly recommended that you review them.

Thanks for the quick replies :)

The router has been working fine for around a yr or so, and on 1.23.. back to 1.22 even though there wasn't too much changed in the revision.

Any other test to make sure it's not burning out?

Run that InSSIDer application to make sure your near by area isn't getting congested with other WiFi routers. Were seeing some issues with routers and areas that are highly populated with other routers. Channels are being used up and routers are having a hard time maintaining a stable wifi connection.

I never use wireless/wifi to game on.  ALWAYS wired connections.  Is that for testing wifi/wireless?

I filter MAC address to the computers I have in the house and no other.  So I don't think anyone is trying to piggy-back on my wireless.  Do you think they could be even with the MAC filter on?  I choke as much of the wireless connection because I don't care about it.

How would I know when it's flaking out?  Just by the logs & Status page?

Ya, just to see who's around you and the information.

People could piggy back if they get in.
You might notice some erratic behavior on Wifi, disconnections and such on wifi. If your not concerned about it then I wouldn't worry. Just know that some high populated areas are starting to see some issues with congestion of wifi routers on 2.4Ghz band. 5Ghz still isn't popular so theres free space there.

Through my cmd prompt, i type in ipconfig/all and my subnet mask is different than what is on the router:  Status/Device Info/Wan section.  And it seems it was an automatic setup.  Should I do it manually?

I recommend setting up reserved IP addresses for ALL devices connecting ON the router, wired and wireless. Makes it easier to trouble shoot, and devices always get the same IP address from the router that you assign it when it's turned on. I like structured management for networking.

WAN section from LAN side will always be different. The WAN side is just the ISP address assignment for router on the WAN side. The LAN side is your internal network with it's own IP address pool and subnet that you can change and assign. 192.168 is the norm for home users, however you can use others like 10 and 172 for an address pool.

I use a custom one formulated from my house address. Ya it's a class A, however it kind of makes things easier and intuitive. Not meant for the avg user however.

Also you don't have to use the entire 200 IP address pool either. If you only have say less than 50 devices on the network, wired and wireless, I've changed the subnet from .254 to .192. This statically sets a pool limit of 50 IP addresses. So you'd have say .2-.50. Most cases this is enough for most home users. This is what I use currently. Still plenty of room for more devices.

I've always manually set ip addresses for all my devices.

Should I enable Anti-Spoofing Checking in Firewall?

There is a priority level of 128 on a game server I play on, for UT3: UDP.  Dir = OUT  has a Timeout of 30.   I also see my local IP address with a 5 digit ? port ? number after.   Is there anything I can do to make this a better connection?

I usually leave it enabled. No harm by it.
