About Alignement for HDD WD 2TB WD20EARS
« on: January 12, 2012, 01:28:52 AM »

Hello  :)

I just bought 2 HDD Western Digital WD20EARS of 2 TB and after searching on the WEB It seems that the hard drives  uses "Advanced Format" which to my understanding are 4k sectors rather than 512 byte sectors.

To function properly, the partitions need to align with this 4k sector size.Otherwise we lost tranfert rates and It reduces "lifetime" of the drive...

As far as I know, when we create the partition and format on Windows 7, the alignment is good and automaticaly done.

i want to configure the 2 HDD in RAID 1 so the Nas will format it in EXT3.

I would like to know if I have to do a special action or if the NAS align automaticaly the Hard Drive?

Thank you in advance

Regards

At any rate, I haven't seen anything user-adjustable in the whole RAID1 setup process. You can try it out on your NAS and see for yourself.
PS How would you validate if the partitions were aligned properly? Outside the NAS using a Linux box?
PPS I have the WD30EZRX-s in RAID1 but have not given me any thougts on that matter. Should I?
