Hiding Shares
« on: January 07, 2012, 09:02:53 AM »

On my system I only have two users, basically a "guest" and "admin".  The shares seem to be working okay based upon proper log in.  Even though the guest can not open (access) the shares for admin persmissions they can see Volume_2, USBDisk_1.  On the admin side when i click on sharecenter device at the base level I can see all the available shares for myself and the 4 shares I permited read only for only for the "guest".

Is there a way to have the guest only see the folders they have access too?  And on the admin accessing the sharecenter I only see the higher level shares (Volume_1, Volume_2, USBDisk_1)?  I tried going back in and click Deny in shares and with nothing clicked, no luck.

Thanks!

Create folder/sub-folder in the volume you want, create new Shared Folder and assign permission to the guest account.

I'm having a heck of a time trying to get just a basic security layer implemented  :(

I have 2 drives installed, standard no RAID.  I want "everybody" to be able to see Volume_1, full authority for everyone.

I want to lock down Volume_2 so I alone have access. In fact I'd prefer if everybody else didn't even see Volume_2 existing (invisible) but that's not really critical.

So here's what I try... I create an account for myself and grant it read/write authority to Volume_2 & that's all I do.

But now, I can't access either volume without a login panel popping up  >:(  (using Windows'7)

And still from my Ubuntu partition (or a friends MacBook) I can see both volumes without any restriction.. grrr!

The manual is very sketchy on the step-by-step guidance for setting up permissions/security. Is there a NAS-for-dummies manual available?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
First to deal with the popup window, the next time you have this popup, leave it as is and go to "Control Panel" (use small icons) and then open "Credentials Manager".  Go down and click on the "Add a Windows Credential" and then enter your log in info and close it and the original popup.  Then try going back into the 320.  It should open fine now and will be remembered.
I am not sure how you and your users are accessing your 320, from the same network or via ftp, but it should not be too difficult to set up 2 network shares, Volume_1 and Volume_2.  For yourself, I would give read and write access to yourself, otherwise you will have to log on to the admin account to access both volumes.  Then for the other users, give them whatever access level you want to "their" volume and set "deny" access to the Volume you want to keep for yourself.  I am not sure about the USB Volume as I don't use one but I think there is a problem blocking that and or setting it up via network shares.  Maybe someone else can help you or do a little trial and error.  Hope this helps.  Good luck.
