802.11N Network Won't Show Up in Scan List
« on: March 17, 2009, 10:06:53 PM »

I have my DIR-825 set up for a 2.4GHz g-only network and a 5GH n-only network with a different SSID. All computers in my house can see the 2.4GHz network in their scan lists and connect. So far, only two of my 802.11n-capable network cards can see the 5GHz network in their scan lists. Oh, they can see the networks of people several houses away but not the one 20 feet from my computer. I have even moved one of the computers as close as 6 feet away from the AP, but still it would not see the AP in its scan list.

I have the 5 GHz network set up like this:
  • Enable wireless always
  • Mode: 802.11n only
  • Auto channel scan: yes
  • Transmission rate: best
  • Channel width: Auto 20/40
  • Visibility Status: Visible

The two adapters that can't see the network are: linksys wusb300n and dlink dwa-652. Both are N-compatible, and both are running the latest drivers.

The two adapters that CAN see the network are: Intel 4965 AGN and Linksys WPC600N. So the AP is obviously beaconing and broadcasting the SSID.

This is not an issue of range; I can see networks far away with the same cards, and I can disable the (working) Intel adapter and plug in one of the others and no dice. Oh... client-wise my systems are all either running Vista Ultimate or XP Pro. I was only able to get the Linksys card to connect with the blessed 'network monitor' app that comes with it; zero config was giving me weird errors... but I just learned it might have been because I initially had WEP configured on that network. The security type wouldn't affect my clients' ability to read beacons, though.

What could be wrong? Any suggestions?

HelpPlzTy,

The DWA-652 does not support dual bands. (2.4Ghz N and 5Ghz N) It only supports the 2.4 band. You need an adapter that can support dual bands. Just because the adapter is an N adapter doesn't mean it will connect to a 5Ghz band running N.

The only adapter we carry at the moment that can do dual band is a DWA-160
