Issues with Port Forwarding
« on: December 09, 2011, 12:01:16 PM »

Hello,

So I've been trying to start a Minecraft server, and the next step, I'm told, is to "port forward." I vaguely understand what that means and what I am supposed to do, but even after getting into my router settings, I have a problem. For some reason, all of my settings seem to be locked. All of the check-boxes and other form objects are grayed out. I suspect that there is something that I need to do to unlock these settings, but I don't know what that could be.

Can you help me?

Thanks,

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
Are you logging into the router as Admin or User? Need to log in as Admin.
You'll need port information for the Minecraft application that your trying to use. Refer to the Mfr of that application for this information.

You'll be using the Advanced/Port Forwarding section on the routers web page.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

You need to log in as Admin inorder to make changes.  The User account is read only access.  if you can't remember the admin password, reset the router and it will go back to the factory default settings.

I'm having issues with port forwarding myself, and want to try and find out if it is with the router or with my ISP.  I have the ports set up to work properly (in theory) to allow for port 25565 to be open, for use with a minecraft server I am attempting to set up on my PC.  According to http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ as well as my friends attempting to connect, the port is not open.  I have hardware version A4 and firmware version 1.21, and my router's webpage claims the firmware is fully updated when I check for updates.

Should I start *****ing at my ISP?

Always go to the DLink web page to check for most recent updates.
