Failed SMART Test
« on: March 01, 2013, 02:49:00 AM »

Hi,

I have a DNS-320 with FW 2.03. RAID 1 configuration with exactly the same two WD disks (1Tb).
Each night a light Smart Test on the two drives is done and until now there was no problems reported (I have a mail each morning with the result of the test on each disk).

I have today a "fail test" message for one of the disks. But when I go to the relevant screen (showing the SMART statistics by disks), there's no indication of bad results (no red cross b. ex.).

I did manually a full SMART Test on the two disks, but the result is the same : one is failed.
A complete volume test doesn't show errors in the volume structure.

How can I check if the disk is good or wrong ?

Many thanks for answers,

Best regards

The fact we do not get a detailed report of the SMART test is about the only thing that annoys me about our DNS-320s.

What we have done in a situation like yours is to take the questionable drive from the unit and put it into a USB caddy and then run full SMART tests on it and compare the results with those taken before the drive was installed as well as those taken every year.

If you decide to do the same I would recommend you use the drive manufacturers disk testing tools, that way you can be sure your drive is fit for use or needs replacing.

Ok, I will follow your advice and try to check externally the status of the disks.
And I need to test each of the disks because I don't know which is the n°1 or n°2...

What a lack of time !

Thanks for your answer.

Number 1 is usually the one in the right hand slot looking at the unit with it facing you.
