Blinking Internet light - DIR 645
« on: October 28, 2013, 11:00:39 AM »

Hi I've tried to install the latest firmware update as suggested by the router's interface and here :http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=54759.0 but then somewhere in the middle of the installation the internet light just began flickering and no other lights were on accept the power.
I've tried pushing the reset button for several times but it did nothing.

One odd thing I noticed is if I connect the PC->DLINK->MODEM (wired) I get an internet connection with the modem serving as a DHCP
Any ideas?

Welcome!

  • What region are you located?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.  A1
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status. I cannot reach the interface.
What region are you located? EU
Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch? If by factory reset you mean pushing the button, then no before the update I just thought that the web interface should work so I've uploaded the bin file as instructed.
Was the router working before any firmware updates? Yes

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? DSL
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have? T&W DSL699U5
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? 50 Mbps/ 3 Mbps
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. I recommend that you disconnect the 645 from the ISP modem. Wire up 1 LAN PC to the back of the 645 and do a factory reset using the button under the router. Hold in for 10 seconds then let go.

Disable any 3rd party security on the PC temporarily. Use IE or FF to see if you can regain the connection to the router at 192.168.0.1 in the browser.

If your ISP modem has a similar IP address you may need to change the IP address on the 645 from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254. Something like that.

Let see if you can re-gain access to the router first.

Did you get your FW update from this site?
http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/support/product/dir-645-wireless-n-home-router-1000

If you didn't i recommend following this for doing a re-load of the FW from the above site:
FW Update Process

Is your ISP modem Bridged currently? If you can bridge the ISP modem, just input the PPPoE user account name and password that you get from the ISP into the routers Setup/Internet/Manual/Connection Type. Set ALWAYS ON the save settings. Power OFF the router and ISP modem, Power ON the ISP modem first then 645 router. It should get a green internet light...

As I've mentioned in my original post I've already tried that and it did nothing. I've tried that again just to be sure, still but nothing :\ .

Nope, the modem's it's 10.0.0.XXX

Let see if you can re-gain access to the router first.

Is your ISP modem Bridged currently?
It was when the DIR-645 was working.

You don't think that the fact that connecting PC->645->Modem works is a bit odd?  It means that the 645 still does something the question is how can I access it?

Ensure your PC is getting the 192.168.0.# address. Ensure your network properties are set to Auto Obtain IP addressing...

Ok lets try this and get the FW .bin file from the UK site first, that I posted in this thread and use FF browser to do the following and see if you can get the Recover Mode accessed then send the .bin file:
Emergency Recovery Mode

If this fails, you'll need to phone contact your regional D-Link support office and get this into RMA.

This didn't work (pressing the 'reset' button and powering up didn't make it blink in any other way and 192.168.0.1 was not accessible), any other suggestions or should I use my warranty ?
