JBOD volume not accessible when RAID 1 fail
« on: February 04, 2012, 03:23:29 AM »

I have two drives in my DNS 320 (2TB and 250GB). The 250GB is volume 1 which mirror with 250GB of 2TB only. The rest of space configured by DNS 320 as JBOD (Linear) Volume 2.
Yesterday, my 250GB disk failed and cannot be detected anymore so RAID 1 degraded. Not knowing that Volume 2 is also reporting crashed and not accessible.
I still have lots of data on Volume 2. Is it possible to get the JBOD volume back or possible to recover data :'(

Hi,
There is a sticky above (second from bottom) with some software to try and recover data.  There have also been posts reporting sucess with a program called "Testdisk", which is free also.
It does seem unusual that both drives would crash though at the same time.  I would try pulling the smaller disk out of the 320 and see if your large drive shows up or vice versa.  If you get nothing still, you might try doing a factroy reset by putting the tip of a paper clip into the small hole in the back of the 320.  It's down between the power supply and ethernet connection.  You have to press it in for about 5 seconds with the power on.  This is supposed to leave your data intact, admin password, users, applications will have to be reset and resaved.  Just don't go through with a reformat.  If you still can't see either of your drives, pull them and see about using the data recovery software.  Unless someone else comes up with some better suggestions.  Good luck

Does "Testdisk" recover from different RAID configurations? Haven't heard of the app prior to this post.

Hi,
Here is the link, http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk .  This would be a better source of information than myself, as I have never used it.  I think it was mentioned in some of the other 3xx forums.  I peruse them all trying to learn.  As I said, it might be worth a look.  Regards.

Thanks. I'll look at some other posts and the website and decide whether to include on the data recovery sticky on the DNS-XXX boards.
