DIR-615 + iTunes Home Sharing
« on: February 12, 2012, 06:40:03 AM »

Hi guys,

I've got dir-615 e4 with the latest firmware - Firmware Version : 5.11RU , Fri, 12 Aug 2011

Connected via Ethernet: Windows 7 pc
Wireless: macbook pro, apple tv 2, couple of iPhones & iPad

Here are some screenshots with the setup:

screen 5

My problem is - when i stream heavy HD content via iTunes Home Sharing form my pc to my laptop it freezes all the time, it's almost impossible to watch a movie. When i stream some SD episodes of tv series everything works great.

I guess the option "Multicast Streams" can help me. But when i enable this one my pc vanishes from the home sharing list, completely, nothing helps.

Thanks a lot in advance, looking forward to some answers.

Be aware that streaming some particular HD movies and how you have the router set up can impact performance. One way around this would be to connect up a external Gb switch between the PC and router. Connect up other devices along with all wired PCs that would need to be connected to it. This would eliminate any router management thats unnecessary.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Try single mode N? If your wireless.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Thank you for the answer.

Unfortunately I've already done almost everything you mentioned:

DNS ip addresses are correct; DNS relay is on; Adavancde DNS does not appear with PPTP, QoS Engine is turned off.
All DHCP addresses are reserved & assigned correctly. uPnP is on (emule client works fine).

I believe the key is Firewall settings...

I've set Endpoint Independent for both TCP & UDP. Disabled "PPTP" & "IPSec (VPN)" & "SIP" options in Advaned/Firewall; Enabled "RTSP" option. I guess I should change these.

p.s. i use single 802.11n with WPA Personal AES cipher.

I would leave those PPTP and IPSec settings ON, however you could see if turning any one of these ON or OFF and see if it helps. I don't think it might. I would see if there is any PORT information for iTunes. Thought I saw some port information for Apple. You could try using the DMZ as a test and see if this helps.

I've tried DMZ for some times, but unfortunately it never helped.

I googled some information about iTunes Home Sharing using VoIP technology, that's why i turned off the "SIP" option.

Thanks a lot for you help! Looking forward to your future answers :D
