DIR-655 becomes unresponsible
« on: February 01, 2012, 11:02:28 PM »

Hello. I'm using DIR-655 A5 (A4 in configuration page), with firmware 1.35W. My Internet connection is about 100/100 Mbps, through fiber optic. The problem is that when I'm downloading torrents, sometimes DIR-655 becomes unanswerable, no Internet connection and I can't access the config page. The only way to solve this, is to restart the router. Any ideas how to fix this?

Btw, QoS is disabled.

The connection is wired.

Might lower your connections for your torrent program. You'll need to refer to the torrent program for this as I don't think this router is unresponisble for this. It might be unresponsive.  ::)

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

That't the only solution? If I limit my connections, speed also decrease. In this situation it'a a bit harder to receive 11 MB/s.

Again template answer..

I'm conected through fiber optic, as I mentioned in the upper post, which means there can't be modem in theory, only switch or router. In my case, DIR-655 is connected to the switch provided by my ISP (DIR-100).

"Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router." - it is set up only for my PC, other devices are not in the list.

Other settings are already in use.

Does this only happen when your torrenting? Could also be that your exceeding the maximum connections your router can handle and why it could be shutting down.

Other factors could contribute to the router not working. So we need additional details and information. Thats why I ask for some "template" details.

Those are troubleshooting suggestions and most of those suggestions do work. Up to you to test them out.
We are here to help each other out. Help us help you. If you aren't willing to try some of the suggestions, then I'll recommend you call DLink and ask for there help.

We can also use teamviewer.com and review your router settings with you to make sure the router is set up well.

Seems to be, because it happens only when P2P is active. I thought DIR-655 is a powerful router, and can handle connections..

I believe this router handles several thousands of connections. However other factors could contribute to it handling any connection, even the lowest amount. How about your ISP, ISP modem, ISP Signal Quality? How well is the 655 configured? How is BT configured? Are you just allowing the entire world to seed up and down from you? You don't always have to have BT wide open to download and seed items. These are the reasons why I ask these "template" questions so we can get a better picture of your system and to better provide suggestions and come to be better resolution. If your issue only happens with P2P then I would look in that direction.

How about your ISP, ISP modem, ISP Signal Quality?

My ISP is ok, no lags or speed problems.
Again, there is no modem, because I'm connected throgh fiber optic (100/100 Mbps). They installed DIR-100 which is configured in switch mode, as it shares the connection to my devices and set-top box (IPTV).

I've disabled QoS, Wireless protection (I don't need it), WISH. Firewall is set up for Endpoint independent.

I'm using special settings, for better speed, both download and upload. Actually their impact are visible, I'm gaining downstream up to 11.1 MB/s.

Do you see the same problem if the DIR-100 is disconnected as a test? Just wondering if anything on that switch is effecting your Torrents.
