Simple Connection Problem
« on: February 02, 2012, 08:39:53 PM »

Hello All,

I just bought a DNS-320 for my home network and I'm running into a bit of trouble just setting it up. After finally getting it to recognize my hard drive I am unable to actually connect to it in the setup wizard. I'm on the page where you have to make sure the power light it solid and then it shows you a list box where (supposedly) the NAS will appear. However, I am unable to connect to it. I have tried a direct connection via a crossover cable and a wireless connection over my home network. I am currently waiting on a D-Link switch to arrive so I can physically connect everything (I have a modem/router combo which of course only has one port) but until then I wanted to get it up and running. Am I missing something? The direct connection should work. I wasn't sure if the wireless connection would for a first-time setup. Until I set it up I don't think there's a way to access it to set up a static IP so the connection process would be a breeze.

Thanks in advance.

I'd wait till your switch arrives.. not sure how u are connecting to it wirelessy seeing itr doesnt have a wireless card in it. Might not support a crossover cable.

Hi,
I agree with drocelot's confusion and advice, as you will need this switch connection for normal use anyway.  I am pretty certain that to make a direct connection you don't use a crossover cable.  A standard ethernet should work but you need to setup a static IP for the NAS as you surmised.  Unless you are dying to get some data transfered to the NAS, just wait for the switch.  Good luck

For the wireless connection I had the D-Link plugged into the router/modem and I was wireless on my PC. Now that I've got the switch though, I still can't see the storage drive in the setup program. Is there some other way to set up the drive? It seems the D-Link software is a piece. I'm running the Setup Wizard on a Windows 7 machine. Should be fine.

Hi,
Make sure you use the right side slot on your 320.  If you know the IP address of your 320, enter those numbers xxxx.xxx.x.xx into your browser and hit enter.  If you don't know the IP, logon to your router and look around, somewhere there will be a list of devices connected to the router with their IP addresses and write down the one for the 320.  This should get you to the 320's GUI and the Admin login screen.  Do the login there and then see if you can format and setup the drive in your 320.  If you cannot find the drive or the format fails, remove the drive and attach it to a windows machine and use Disk Manager to delete all volumes, shut it down, and then replace in the 320 and try again.   Hope these suggestions help.  Good luck

Had to download SuperScan to find the IP. Everything's good now.
