DNA-320 noise
« on: February 21, 2012, 07:53:32 AM »

I found that the 320 was simply too noisy(fan)
It have the loud "hoe hoe" sound when your environment is quite.

or that's normal?

I have one of my units sitting on the upper shelf of my computer desk, and yes the loud fan is normal when it goes into high speed mode.  It's like a mini vacuum cleaner in there when it powers up.

Hi Jeff,
Not sure if it will help, but first off make sure to check and resave the fan settings to auto and check the settings for drive hibernation.  The other thing I have noticed is that in my environment, if I position the unit so as to have a wall or other hard surface close, withing a foot or two, the fan seems to be louder.  Whereas if I can re-direct the exhaust in a different direction at an angle to the wall and at 4-5 feet away the noise is dramatically lower.  Worth a try if possible.  Good luck

The cooling fan used in the DNS-320 is the same brand/model as that used in DNS-323. It's kind of noisy when running in high speed mode and there's nothing one can do to minimize except to replace it.

Hi,

I seemed to have the same problem but it almost sounded like a high pitch vibration. Turned out the hard drive wasn't solid in its seating and it was vibrating against the plastic shell. I just custom made a piece of foam and it's been quiet ever since.

I assumed your doesn't come with a foam on the cover, it does help to 'secure' the drive firmly to the cage and help to minimize the overall sound a little bit.
