Docsis 3 modem from Brighthouse

Just joined the forums and search for any similar situations but didn't find anything with a dir-655.

Here is the problem:
I'm on Brighthouse Lighting package and using an ARRIS docsis 3.0 modem with my DIR-655. This last week my internet was dropping and reconnecting. Called Brighthouse and they sent a technician 3 times and could not find the problem. It would drop and then reconnect. Because my router is not their equipment they pretty much told me there's not much they can do. I'm using my router because the wifi signal from their modem does not send a strong enough signal upstairs.

What I have hooked up:
From the modem to the router and then I have my apple tv, bluray player, network drive, and ATT Microcell.

I tried reconfiguring it from the modem to the microcell to the router and received the same issue. Is it possible my router may be giving up?

Right now I have my laptop hooked up directly to the modem and haven't received any issues.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

Has a Factory Reset been performed?


What Arris Modem model # do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.


Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition,and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Sorry for not responding earlier, I've been out of the house and thank you for your response. I ended up switching my plan to a lower plan and now Brighthouse provided me with an Ubee DDW2600 modem. It won't work with my dir-655 router. Pretty much I believe it is not allowing me because the modem is not in bridge mode. I asked the technician and he said it won't matter but for whatever reason its still not working. I've search online and could not find anything for this particular modem settings. I've tried multiple ways but from what I searched I may need admin access to the modem and I cannot figure out the user/password access to the settings.

I do have access to the user/user information but gives me limited access to the settings.

Ya, this model modem is a gateway. I see that the log in info for admin is user and user fo the management page at 192.168.0.1. Not sure if this modem can be bridged. I would look to see if there is a DMZ, and if there is, you could try to connect the 655 to the modem, look at the WAN IP address the 655 gets from the modem found under Status/Device Info/Wan section. Input this address into the DMZ on the ISP modem. I would also see if you can reserve that IP address ON the modem too.

If the modem doesn't have any options that you can change, I would either, see if you can get a stand alone modem only, or if not, use the Modem as your host router and turn the 655 in to an AP.

I spoke to 3 different people from BH and the last tech asked me access with a log-in admin/cableroot user/pass combo and it gave me a different menu. Went to tools and options and it gave me an option to bridge the modem. Reboot the modem and router. Plugged the cable in port 3, why don't know, and to the router and it's now working.

Thanks for your help and I will keep your steps on hand just in case I do get a modem I'm unable to bridge.
