Help with prioritizing streaming video over downloading
« on: March 03, 2012, 05:25:49 PM »

I've been browsing the forum and the internet and can't quite find the info I need so I'm hoping some generous soul here can walk me through this.  While I'm fairly well versed with computers, networking is definitely my weak link so excuse me in advance if I don't know what I'm talking about.

Anyway here's the situation:  I currently share my network with 1 desktop with a wired connection, 1 htpc on wireless, and 5 laptops, all wireless obviously.  Under normal circumstances this works fine and everything is fast enough.  The problem starts when someone starts downloading a torrent.  Once uTorrent is turned on the everything else just slows to a crawl and no one can watch netflix or movies streamed from the server.

So what I'd like to do is set a QoS rule to make uTorrent the lowest priority so that anything else will get bandwidth before it does, and hopefully that will make it so movies can be watched while stuff is being downloaded and everyone will be happy.

What I'm stuck on so far is that I have no idea how to write a QoS rule.  I don't know how to figure out what ports uTorrent or netflix use, and I don't know what protocol is or how to set it.  Hopefully this is basic stuff for you geniuses out there.  I could really use a little guidance.  Thanks.

Review the gaming and QoS stick for XBL information. Can help u out on some examples on setting up QoS.
