DHCP Reservation Problem
« on: February 09, 2012, 03:12:34 AM »

Hello !

I have a DIR-615 with latest firmware installed (v8.02). I think there is a bug in DHCP address range checking.

Problem: When I define "DHCP IP Address Range" from 192.168.x.2 to 192.168.x.10, I cannot reserve any of
the IPs in that range. See the picture for error message.
If I define 192.168.x.20 to 30 the reservation works for any IP in this range, BUT also work to
reserve ANYTHING that starts with .2xx without any warning !
After further investigation I came to a conclusion: DHCP range checking is looking ONLY at the first
digit from the last octet or something like that.
Workaround: Set the address range from .30 to .40 for example.

What the subnet mask set for?
Can you reserve the same IP address if you set a range from .2 -.50 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.192? Samething?

How about if the range is set for .100-.199? Same thing?

Case 1:
Router address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.192
DHCP Range: .2 - .50
If I try to reserve a .225 it WORKS ! So yes, it's the same thing.

Case 2:
If I let the subnet intact to a /26 , it won't let me define range .100 - .199.
Error Message: "The 4th range of "Start IP Address" must be between 1 ~ 62."
If I switch back to a /24 subnet and leave the same range (100-199), the reservation of (for example) a .220 does not work. The same thing for a .100 - .200 range either (doesn't work).

Second conclusion: Definitely there is a bug. The router accepts buggy configurations in specific subnet mask/DHCP range/Reservation combinations.

What HW version is your router?
What region are you in?

Subnet mast define how big your IP address pool is and how that works. I'll check some resources and see if there is any known problems and if this is correct behavior. I would use 255.255.255.192 for your subnet if it's working. I actually prefer this, specially for avg users with only a few devices. Theres really no need to have a ton of open addresses not be used.  ::)

v8.02 == H1
East Europe

I know what subnet mask is. I've just said that putting a /26 doesn't solve the problem. I still manage to reserve an IP that is out of range BOTH from subnet and DHCP address range.

In particular, I have a much narrower subnet but this is out of our discussion.

And factory resetting the router doesn't resolve this?

Only thing I might do is to reload FW and try again. Please review the recommended FW update sticky for the update process in this forum if you want to try that. If it still happens then I would contact your local DLink support office and ask about this, try level 2 support if you can get one.

Let us know how it goes.

I already "re-flashed" it. The FW update procedure is pretty straightforward. There is no need for a step-by-step tutorial to do that, at least for me...  :)

I contacted the local support office forums. Waiting for replies...  :)

There is some differences in the FW update sticky that also helps ensure the process goes smoothly FYI.

Hope they let you know what is going on. Keep us posted.

Problem solved. :)
They gave me a test firmware which actually solved the DHCP issues.
Email "On Schedule" and possibility to change CountryRegion parameter are pending. :)

It seems that D-Link cares...

It's a modified beta version of already available (on ftp.dlink.biz) v8.03.
It's called DIR615H2-FW803B02_Beta_DHCP.bin
