Wireless Connection Issues
« on: March 26, 2009, 06:38:52 PM »

I cannot seem to stay connected via wireless (default settings with internet wizard and wireless wizard creating new SSID and password WPA Personal).

Issue:
Firmware: 1.13/1.15/1.16b3
S/N:F3ob179001864

Less than a minute after establishing a wireless connection, the connection drops and the SSID is no longer broadcast (or at least detectable).

I have Intel Wireless 3945ABG for my notebook and ATT Tilt (HTC Kaiser) as my WiFi devices and same thing happens.  I do live in an apartment complex with at least 8 routers in range.

With 1.16FW wireless had message: initFailed ... on status page

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Partial Log with 1.13FW:

I want you to try one more thing...

First, I would like you to hold down the reset button for 90 seconds, without letting go. After the first 30 seconds, remove the power plug, and wait 30 more, and plug it back in, still without letting go.

Then, flash it again with the beta firmware.  If you are still getting the Wireless "init failed", your wireless is broken and your router needs to be replaced.

I tried "Reinvented's" suggestion and the following happened:

1. Firmware Upgrade:  Wireless connection active with open connection
 a.  Configured security settings only (wireless wizard is not usable)
 b.  Rebooted
 c.  "init failed"
 d.  Rebooted
 e.  Wireless connection was active, however (as soon as wireless restart happpened w/in 5 minutes)
 f.  Connection dropped and SSID is no longer visible
 g.  Exact same issue with previous firmware.

Any other suggestions?

Is this only on the one laptop you described? In other words have you looked to see if the router disappears on other computers? Does the laptop you are using have the newest drivers for the network card?
Do other computers that are connected wireless, disconnect all of a sudden? If you have tried just one laptop then try other laptops to confirm its not the laptops network card.

rockyriver,

The wireless init failed message means there is a problem with the wireless being able to start up properly and broadcast.  This is a hardware failure, so no...it's not his laptop or his card.

This is not really fun since I have called technical support 3 times over this issue (Christopher-L1, -John-L2-, Gilbert-L1-,  Amy-L2-).  Now, I realize that each technician can only help so far so I don't blame them, but I certainly like how it is like your problem is fixed when it isn't and to call back again and again.

Troubleshooting:
*Changing channels
*Changing router IP
*Changing settings "in tandem" reducing gigabit wan to 10/100 and changing channel to 6
*Reflashing firmware
*Turning off router firewall
*Changing RTS values

Update:  3-5 minutes after rebooting or resetting wireless, connection drops and SSID no longer appears for any wireless clients (ATT 8925 and Gateway m285).  Log file still shows "wireless restart" and then a few minutes later shows "timeout" for device that was connected, however wireless settings seem fine on router.

I have been told to wait 30 minutes to an hour for settings to take place twice and call back if I still have issues.  I thought setting changes took place immediately after reboot or setting change.

I have been told by a Level 2 technician that my device is working properly and is most likely interference with other devices.  (product specialist is supposed to call me on Monday, but only because I specifically requested it)

Maybe someone can help me with this:  If I did have wireless interference and my notebook is 3 feet from the router.  Should I be able to still stay connected since it is closer to the signal than a possible interfering device that must be at least 20 feet away or on another floor of the apartment complex?

As a sidenote, I have not made any mention of using 1.16 ... only 1.15 and 1.13 firmware.

Thanks again for your help.

...sounds like a hardware issue.

Always best to avoid tiers 1 and 2 (really I don't see how them reading the manual to you is a form of help). 3rd tiers will be able to tell you faster if it's a h/w failure.
