Remote access setting?
« on: April 12, 2012, 05:23:27 AM »

I just got my DNS-325 2 weeks ago and been playing with it ever since. Got the P2P running and like it alot. Emule is another nice feature. I'm now trying to set up for remote access through internet. Here's what I've done so far.
-Registered account @ Dlinkddns.com
-Enable DDNS setting on the NAS
-Forward port 80 to NAS ip on my router.
and successfully updated host on DLinkDDNS.com.

But when i try to access it from internet, it keeps saying connection time out, server take too long to respond. Did i miss something? can anyone guide me through this, please. thanks

What are you attempting? Forwarding only port 80 will just open HTTP from wide-area-network, so you will only be able to access the NAS management web-interface. If you want to have some file-sharing, then you also need to forward appropriate ports either for SMB/CIFS or AFP protocol, whichever you are using.
SMB uses TCP port 445
AFP uses TCP port 548

Thansk for reply. I'a attemping to remotely add torrent to the NAS when i'm away from home. So it can download the movies, pictures, TV shows. What other port would i have to forward to do this?

Well, if you add the torrent via Web-interface of the NAS, then HTTP and port 80 should be sufficient.
Do you get the log-in screen when you access your dlinkddns.com address?
Are you sure this DDNS thing works correctly (ie your hostname resolves to your external IP address)?
Do you see on NAS that the DDNS name was updated successfully?

Thanks for quick reply Priitv8
i did not get the log-in screen when i access my dlinkddns.com address.
The hostname is resolved to my external IP address correctly
The DDNS name was updated successfully on the NAS.
More info on my setup.
DSL modem - allowed all traffic
TrendNet router - Fordwarding port 80 to NAS IP address
NAS - Enable DDNS, and DDNS name was successfully updated.

If you are on DSL, are you sure your ISP has ports open in the first place?
Can you access any other services on your LAN from external networks (SSH, FTP etc)?
