Using 321 Without Network

I'm wondering if I can use the DNS321 or the DNS323 independantly from a network. I'll be putting my music on this and I travel the road a lot with my laptop. Can I use this 321 with a USB cabel or a cat5 to play my music. I will not have a network going at all when using the laptop.

You cannot use it with USB, it has no USB port - you can use it directly connected with an ethernet cable, provided you set static ip addresses on both the DNS-321 and the laptop.

Given the fact that you're likely to be disconnecting and reconnecting the laptop from network(s) and having to fiddle with ip addresses constantly, your needs might be better met with an external USB drive.

The nice thing about DNS is your can change out drives. I would use it in Raid and if one drive went I can change it out. So I CAN use this with a ethernet cable.

If the drives are travelling with you they are going to be at high risk for damage regardless.  The added risk comes with the rough handling travelling provides.

If you lose one drive due to shock you will probably lose both.  This device is not designed to absorb shock.  I would be much more comfortable with using a smaller (read fits in pocket) drive that I can back up externally over the interwebs nightly.

But yes you could do it with statics on both ends (PC and DNS)

If you plan to use it without using the network, you can use a cross over cable ( between DNS 321 and your pc).

Yes you CAN use it with an ethernet cable, no it does not need to be a cross-over cable, and last but not least, please don't confuse RAID1 with backup, that's not it's purpose.

Are you saying they are more at risk than an external drive?

An external drive could potentially be designed to be some degree of shock resistant, and is more likely to be something you can put in a pocket instead of packing in luggage (and therefore being at risk depending on how your luggage is handled.

I wouldn't put a hard drive anywhere I wouldn't put a laptop (as it is one of the more sensitive components), and I don't know anyone who puts their normal (i.e. not toughbook) laptop in luggage.

The DNS series of devices were never designed to be transported with drives inside.

First I think I can use this unit like a portable 2GB drive, go to my job attach it to the network, and OPS, 2TB storage with you files is available for use. But when I look more carefully to the unit I realize THIS UNIT IS NOT FOR TRANSPORTING HARD DRIVES INSIDE. HARD DRIVES CAN MOVE! HARD DRIVE CAN DAMAGE UNIT OR CAN BE DAMAGED BY UNIT. FRONT PLASTIC COVER CAN'T HOLD DRIVES INSIDE IN ROUGH CONDITION, AND DESKTOP HARD DRIVES IS NOT DISIGNED FOR THIS CONDITION!

Note: 2.5 Hard Drives is for LAPTOPS, so I think Passport can absorb shock and can be used if you travel.
