Remote Backup Application: Port Usage
« on: April 22, 2012, 01:48:01 AM »

Hello Forum!

I'm trying to configure two identical DNS-320's (both running the latest 2.02 firmware) to automatically backup their data in both directions. Here's the illustration:

1. NAS A is at a remote location with the Backup Server feature enabled. Ports 22, 873, and 62057 are being forwarded from the DSL modem (w/ fixed IP) to the NAS as per the instructions on the right hand panel of the config screen.

2. NAS B is at another location. This site is not running the Backup Server, but hosts the NAS to NAS backup schedules. It is behind a dynamic addressing DSL modem. Forwarding the same three ports from the DSL modem to the NAS at this location didn’t help.

When I try to finalize the schedules (connection test), the SSH test passes, but the RSYNC test fails with "(SSH Refused)". I feel like more ports need forwarded. I've checked the security logs on both modems. Location B's modem isn't showing any outbound violations, but there’s outbound port activity coming from location A NAS on random ports between 39901 through 39920, and 53768 through 53778. I’m hesitant to forward a wide range of ports that I’m not certain of their function. Does anyone know all the ports this service requires?  ???

You should be able to telnet to each of those ports to confirm open or use a port scanner on the web to sweep your IP and list open ports. 873 is the rsync listener so should be fine. The error you are getting is similar to what I got when I 1st tried this (locally though on another NAS as destination) as the rsync daemon wasn't listening on the remote box.

Is it possible your ISP may be blocking some of these ports? I have Cox cable and run into this problem frequently.

Thanks guys. Turns out it was a combination of problems (bad DNS settings on NASs, mismatched passwords, double NAT). I emailed tech support too, and they told me they tried what I'm setting up, and it worked for them! I was surprised to hear that. For security reasons, I'm only forwarding those three ports on the modem with the fixed IP. In my simulation at home, it looks like I've fixed it! Here's an outline:

NAS A
backup server ON
3 ports forwarded from router
modem has fixed IP

NAS B
backup server OFF
no port forwarding
modem has dynamic IP
