Andriod breaking network?
« on: January 04, 2012, 07:09:04 AM »

Hello,
First time poster here.

My issue is that when I switch to wifi on my android device (Droid Incredible first, now Galaxy Nexus), my entire network goes down.  On my Win 7 laptop it says limited connectivity. Usually I can get it to come back up after a power cycle but it's been as bad as having my isp refresh my modem and factory resetting the router.  So I quit using wifi on the Incredible because I couldn't figure it out.  I have tried my new phone and it just did the same thing.  I mention android only because when people come over and use wifi on the iphone, there is no problem.

My setup, dgl-4500 with basically factory settings.  Hardware vers. A1 and firmware 1.02.  Connected to the router are (wired)tv, xbox, dvr and blu ray. Wireless is one laptop but as many as 3 have been connected at once.

Thank you for your time.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA Auto or try WPA2 Only and Try TPIK only then try AES only for cipher.

Let us know how it goes.

Sorry that it's taken so long to get back, the wife crashed our car and I've been dealing with that mess.

I reset the router and I was running in N & G, wpa2 only and AES only.  My network still goes down with the phone in wifi mode.  It doesn't take it down instantly, but will eventually even if the phone is just laying there not in use.  When it happens, I can just turn off wifi on the phone and then the network comes back to life after a few minutes.  This is so bizarre to me.

Okay, I've been problem free for a couple of weeks by switching the cipher to TKIP.  Thank you for the help.  Also, is there any security risks by using TKIP only?

No majors, if your devices don't support AES then your ok. If your devices support AES, then use AES only. Glad it's been working. Enjoy.
