Does anyone know whether the embedded UPnP server in fw 2.02 handle subtitles?  I still have fw 2.0 and the included UPnP server does not handle subtitles.

I am not sure whether to upgrade since fw 2.02 received a lot of criticism. However, if any of you can assure that fw 2.02 solved the subtitle problem of UPnP server, I would upgrade.

BTW, I have also installed MediaTomb, but it does neither show subtitles. If anyone knows how to fix that, I would also appreaciate any comments.

Whats the playback device? I have no issues with sub titles on MKV files running though my LG BD660 player, although my LG smart TV won't do it.

Thank you for your reply. The playback device is a WDTV Live Streaming media player.

I can see subtitles when I connect through samba, but it randomly freezes. So I was trying to watch videos through media server, which doesn't freeze. But, so far, I couldn't find a way to see subtitles.

I have renamed the subtitle file (.srt) to has the same name as the video file. Both files are on the same folder.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have installed that latest firmware. As far as I know, it only fixes some bugs of a certain online service.

What puzzles me is that, before buying the DNS-320, I used to stream movies from a WD My Book external drive connected through a USB cable to the router, the router connected wirelessly to the WDTV, and the movies played fine, without stuttering. So I cannot understand why the movies now stutter when I connect the DNS-320 through a cat6 cable to the WDTV (through the router, not directly), since the wired 1 Gbit connection should be faster than the wireless n.

So I guess it is some bug related to samba between the DNS-320 and the WDTV.  Could it be possible? Because, I repeat, the movies do not stutter when I choose media server. The only problem is that I cannot see subtitles in media server.

Have you tried streaming from your PC (assuming you have a windows PC) you could set this up in media player - see if streaming from PC helps. If this resolves your problems then atleast you can conclude its the NAS box.

I have tried streaming from my Windows 7 pc through Windows Media Player "Play to" feature and the videos played fine. However, I believe Windows streams through UPnP, not from network shares. And I have no problem in streaming from UPnP other than the lack of subtitle support (important issue for me).

I have been reviewing my network shares config in the DNS-320 web UI and enabled oplocks. I read in the web that allowing oplocks would increase performance as long as the video is not shared among more than one person. In a first try I watched a movie for a few minutes and it didn't freeze. But I tried again the following day and the stuttering and freeze problem happened again. And there was no other client in my network that was accesing the movie but only the WDTV.

I also tried to set up NFS shares, but I was unsuccessful. When I tried to access them in my WDTV menu, it displayed a sign saying that the folders did not contain media. There are other options like "root squash" but, so far, I could not find information on how to configure the network shares.

Do you believe that this problem could be due to a wrong network share setup? Any ideas?

I am guessing its a limitation of the Western Digital set up.

My LG blu ray player picks up UPNP server and network share locations and plays anything I throw at it.  It choose between multiply audio tracks if available and subtitle tracks...
But my 8 times more expensive LG smart TV is much limited in its skills playing back media. It only works from the UPNP server, will only play the first available audio track in media (no options to change) and won't play back subtitles.

I've gone for LG hardware because they funny enough have the best media player flexibility in Bluray and TV hardware. But I find it very odd that two devices are so different.

I would think you maybe need to try another UPnp/DNLA device.

After all the comments and different approaches to find a solution, I tried updating the NAS firmware (I had 2.0). So far, I was reluctant to update it due to the several negative comments FW 2.02 received. And because it did not specify that updating to 2.03 would fix my problem. Eventually, I gave up and updated it to the latest beta fw 2.03 and my problem seems to have gone.

So far, I have watched two movies, streamed from windows networks shares, and I have not seen any stuttering or freezing issues. I even watched the movies while I was downloading torrents and the WDTV did not freeze.

Moreover, my RAID array did not degrade, as it was reported by someone in this forum. All my data is fine. I will then post this info on the sticky topic for everybody.

I hope I will not have to start another topic because of this matter. So far, it seems solved.

Unfortunately I did not really understand your last post in this thread.
(To me it looks like if you are describing other issues that are not actually related to subtitle streaming. Such as stuttering and freezing issues.) I am myself considering to upgrade to firmware 2.03 beta in order to resolve this known bug (uPnP subtitle handling) in the earlier firmware.

Hi beta02.  Actually, I went off-topic with my last post. I ended up asking for subtitle support in media server (UPnP) because I experienced stuttering and/or freezing when I streamed movies from Windows network shares, and I didn't have that problem with UPnP.

Since I upgraded to the last fw, I did not test whether UPnP support subtitles. I can only tell you that this fw fixes the problem of browsing through the movies because now you can see them in alphabetical order.

From what I read in other posts, UPnP does not support external subtitles. If you install fun_plug and mediatomb, and provided you know a little bit of linux, maybe you can make it work with some script that you can find by simply doing a google search (I can't remember where I saw that, but I could not make it work).
