I have configured my DIR-605L for no security. I want to provide free wireless internet for the guests that come to my house. How do I insure that guests connecting wirelessly to the 605 can access the internet only and can NOT hack into the computers on my internal house network?


My internet is provided by DSL. My DSL router is the DHCP server for my home network. My network uses a subnet different then 192.168.0.1.


I have set the following 605 configuration settings:

Security Mode: Disable Wireless Security

Internet Connection Page:
  Static IP
  IP Address: I am using a fixed address on my home subnet
  Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
  Default Gateway: The IP address on the DSL router. This is on my home subnet.
  Primary DNS Server: My ISP's data.
  Secondary DNS Server: My ISP's data.

LAN Setup Page:
  Router IP Address: 192.168.0.1
  Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
  Local Domain Name: <blank>
  Enable DNS Relay: CHECKED

  Enable DHCP Server: CHECKED

You would need to use the Guest Zone option which this router doesn't have from what I can see.

Does GuestZone allow you to somehow have two connection points, one secure and one unsecure, using the same wireless router? I don't need that. I bought the 605 strictly to supply a free internet connection.

I just assumed that there would be a way to configure the 605 unit to go directly to and from the internet for EVERY network packet.

Are you saying that I can't do what I want with a 605?

Guest Zone is for allowing guest connections to the Internet on the WAN side of the router and does not allow any connections to the LAN side network and private areas on the LAN side. Its a one connection point for users to connected to either using a password or unsecured with no password. The normal AP connection has connections to both WAN of course and access the LAN side on the private network.

If the Guest Zone option is not listed in the routers settings, then the 605 is not supporting of it. I looked at an emulator of the 605 and don't see Guest Zone listed. Routers like the DIR-655, 645 and other DIR series routers have the Guest Zone option.

This one only seems to have the normal AP zone which if you did unsecured, would allow anyone connecting access to your private network.
