Cannot see DLNA devices when hardwired to DIR-655
« on: May 21, 2012, 11:38:43 AM »

The issue I'm having is that for some reason I cannot see my synology NAS from my WDTV Live players (or PS3 or Samsung TV) when the NAS connected directly to one of the 4 GbE ports on the 655 using media server (DLNA) protocol.  I've moved the NAS to another location on my network and not directly connected to the 655 and all the other media players see it except for the WD that's connected to one of the ports on the back of the 655.  As a work-around, I have set the WD player that's connected to the 655 to use network shares instead of DLNA and this seems to work fine.  So, there must be something that the 655 is doing wrt the DLNA protocal that is blocking communications.

I have the 655 configured as an access point and have turned off DHCP and every other function that could be causing any issues.  I've turned UPNP on and off to see if it resolves the problem, and although it seems to have some bearing on the problem, the issue persists.  I also have a DIR-645 also configured as an access point (not connected to the 655) and have the synology NAS connected directly to it and it works just fine.  All media players can see the NAS except for the one that's connected to the 655.
I've been having this issue for some time now and have worked around it by moving the 655 so it wouldn't be an issue.  However, I needed the wireless and gigabit switch capability upstairs and am battling this issue once again.  I'd really like to keep the 655 and get this working, but it seems as the 655 is the culprit here.
Any input greatly appreciated.

I presume that you are using the LAN ports in back of the 655 and 645 for connection to the network and not using the WAN port right?

I would compare the settings of the 645 and the 655 and make sure the settings are correct. Shut off everything, SPI, WISH, WPS, all filters and such.
Can you get a DLNA connection if you turn off WiFi security on the 655?
Wonder if you should connect to the guest zone and test.

I can only presume that if the 645 is working and the 655 isn't in this configuration, either the configuration is wrong on the 655 or the 655 may not allow DLNA traffic has it doesn't support it natively. You may want to place a difference AP device in place of the 655 if this is the case and move the 655 to a lesser needed area or use it has a host router.

What FW is currently loaded on these routers?

You may want to take a look at these threads:

Thanks for your quick response furry.   Aswers to your questions/comments...
Yes, the gigabit ports and not using the WAN on eithre 655 nor 645.  I'll take another look at the two sets of settings between the two dlink routers and make sure everything is turned off.  I really wish there was a setting that does this automatically as using a router as an access point is pretty common.  All I want is the thing to be a gigabit switch and a wireless AP.
As for FW on the 655 I'm currently running 2.03NA but had 2.07NA on it and just downgraded back to 2.03 to see if that would solve the problem - but it didn't.
I'd really like to get this resolved with this router.  I can't believe that such a popular device would inherently not allow DLNA traffic.
Thanks for the links.  I checked them but my quick scan didn't yield anything fruitful for me.  I've set home theater networks up for my self and friends and haven't had this issue with any other installation except for this isolated issue with the 655.

FYI, having AP options was removed from DLink routers long time ago and was told it was due to legal reasons. DLink makes native and dedicated DAP model APs for this usage. Routers are not really meant to be used as native APs. They and many features that are designed to be used as a router and not as an AP natively. Besides, seems a waste when you have to disable all these features just to have a router work as an AP. I would recommend using something else in place of the 655 as an AP if you can't get it to work.

FYI, 2.07NA breaks SharePort and is not recommended at this time. Dlink is aware of the issue.

Thanks for your time and response Furry.  This forum owes a lot to you for your dedication and insights.
I think I will replace the 655 with another 645, which seems to work just fine for me right now.  I'd like to replce my current "gateway" (WRT54G2) with the 655.  I use the WRT as a gateway and DHCP server (don't use the LAN ports since they're 10/100 only) because it's located in a wall cabinet in our upstairs closet alongside of the cable modem.  All the house ethernet lines go to that cabinet.  When I get some time to experiment, I'll try the 655 and see if when it's operating as a full up router if it passes DLNA traffic.  However, if I have the same issue with DLNA then it won't work for me.

The 655 will be a great host gateway router for you. Keep us posted on how it goes.  ;)
