Did D-Link ever fix their DNS-320 UPnP/DLNA server?
« on: May 19, 2012, 10:56:22 PM »

Its a couple of weeks shy of a year since I bought my DNS-320 to store photo, music and video files and play them on my TV without having to boot up a computer, only to find that it didn't work as advertised.

As I previously posted in June 2011 (topic=39052.0), the DNS-320 implementation with version 2.00 firmware doesn't stream Photos or Music to my Samsung UN46B8000XF Television & the video directory structure displays incorrectly on the TV. Back then, D-Link Tech Support couldn't help and referred me to Samsung.

Subsequently, I installed TWONKY media server on the DNS-320, TWONKY streamed the stored Photos & Music properly and presented logical directories on the TV. Also, minidlna installed on a UBUNTU computer, and mapped to the files stored on the DNS-320 is able to stream all three types of files (Photo, Music & Video) stored on the DNS-320 to my TV, but of course I have to leave the computer on.

I'm disappointed that DNS-320 owners to have to “hack” a commercial product or adapt freeware written by a Netgear engineer after paying D-Link for a commercial product!

Has anyone gotten the DNS-320 to stream photos, music and video files using the D-Link supplied firmware?

I have no issues what so ever streaming media (Photos, music or Videos) to my LG smart TV or Bluray player. Bluray player is alot more robust with MKV video files and also not only see's the DNS320 as a upnp server but also picks up the network shares.

I chose the LG gear over Samsung and Sony because LG seemed to have made the best integrated media support over a network . Samsung and Sony both have quirks in some shape or another.

i use a Samsung UE32d65, which is working good with Firmaware 2.03beta.
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Multimedia/dns320/Beta/Firmware/
With the 2.03 the SSL Webaccess is not working anymore and the Webbased Filebrowser (forgot the Name) is gone. Was a crap, so this i dont miss.

As you can see in this http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42827.0 Masterlist they have fixed some upnp stuff.

But the Samsung Smart TV is not Smart. No Possibility to hear Music while showing Photoshow etc.
And the CPU is extrem Slow...

I am on the 2.03 beta firmware and the UPNP AV server does not stream files at all for me. I have two WDTV Live boxes and they can both get a directory listing from the UPNP server but when i choose a file to play the network path appears to be bad. I get the same result using Bubble UPNP on my android phone. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

I rolled back to 2.02 after trying the new beta. I had quite a few problems, one was the UPNP server no longer working correctly.

All,

Thanks for all the replies.

I have an ASUS RT-N16 router that supports attaching an external USB 2.0 Hard Drive. The router firmware can share the USB drive on the network (poor mans NAS) and has a built in DLNA server to stream music, photos and video from the USB drive.

As further verification that my problem is in the DNS-320 UPnP/DLNA server implementation, on Tuesday, I copied my entire DNS-320 “DLNA Share” directory to a 250 GB USB drive attached to the router and configured the router's DLNA firmware to share those files. When I select the RT-N16 server on my Samsung UN46B8000XF Television, the TV has no problem displaying my pictures or playing hundreds of different music or video files from the USB Hard Drive. The photo, music & video directory structures all display correctly on the TV. These are the exact same files from the DNS-320 -just played by a different server.

The only downside is that the RT-N16 doesn't support putting the USB drive to sleep when it is not in use.

I actually had this setup before I bought the DNS-320 and was happy with the result. I bought the DNS-320 to duplicate this functionality on much larger hard drives, power them down when not in use and to provide RAID functionality to insure against data loss. Unfortunately, I can't use the DNS-320 to serve my pictures or music, and it seems to corrupt my Outlook (2000, 2007 & 2010) .pst files whenever I try to add new emails to my backups.
