DIR-855 and XBox360 IP Address Issue
« on: March 27, 2009, 12:13:12 AM »

I just purchased a D-Link Dir-855 and I am having a difficulty setting it up with my XBox360. Here are my stats:

- D-Link Dir-855
- Hardware Version A2
- Firmware Version 1.12
- ISP is Earthlink DSL

Below are my configurations:

Port Forwarding:
UDP = 88
UDP = 3074
TCP = 3074

Manually set XBOX 360 IP to:
IP = 192.168.0.50
Mask = 255.255.255.0
Gateway = 192.168.0.1

Manually set DNS Servers:
Primary DNS = 192.168.0.1
Secondary DNS = 192.168.0.1

Set the DMZ to 192.168.0.50

The XBox Live works when I connect directly to my Earthlink modem. I cannot connect when I am wired through to the DLink router via Ethernet (this is not a wireless issue). The XBox cannot obtain an IP address from the router. I have called DLink and tried creating a static IP and setting up a DMZ. No luck at this point; spend a several days on this setup and any assistance would be appreciated.

I would leave the xbox to automatic and have the router assign it an IP and from the router make use of the DHCP reservation list and reserve the IP of the xbox in the router and you will always pull the same IP.

You don't need port forward for xbox.  Set the xbox to automatic network.  On the 855, set UPnP to on and MTU to 1500 on cable or 1462 for DSL.

Can the 855 connect to the internet?  If not, try setting the 855 manual internet mac address to the mac address of the dsl or cable router.

It is my understanding that Xbox port forwarding is for routers that are not "compatible", don't have UPnP and require port forward.  Modern routers with UPnP, eliminates the need for forwarding.  I have 4 Xbox’s going at most times.  How could I forward the same port to 4 different static IPs?  Can't.  Thus, you don't need port forwarding.

If you insist on port forwarding, you have to assign, whatever the device is, a static IP.  Otherwise, with a dynamic IP, the forwarding would go somewhere else on the LAN.  That sounds like why the dreambox acts like it does - not assigned a static IP.   IMO, when you get rid of forwarding, it works like it should due to UPnP.

If dreambox and xbox are working, the ports are open because UPnP makes it happen.  The router is doing the work and you can not see it.  Why worry about it - be happy.

If you want to play port forward games you have to set up static IPs or reserved DHCPs for dreambox and xbox.  Otherwise, random IPs will be assigned.  That was why dreambox did not work when you set up port forward.

There is no need to do forwarding for you.  UPnP eliminates the need to do that.
