What am I doing wrong?
« on: April 01, 2009, 08:57:53 AM »

Just got this router and I am having a hell of a time trying to configure it to work with my DSL gateway router (ATT/2Wire) like how I want it to. Here is how I want to use this router.

Wired from 2Wire Router to switch to three PCs
Wireless from 2Wire Router to DIR-825 Router
Wired from DIR-825 Router to an Xbox360 and two PCs

I can get the two routers to work and access the internet through a wired connection. Here's how they are connected:

Wired from 2wire Router to DIR-825. DIR-825 wired to PC. I can access the net, ping both routers, get to configuration pages for both of the routers.

I can't seem to get the two routers to talk wirelessly. Once i get the wired connection working I configure the wireless settings on both routers. Same 2.4ghz channel, same security settings, SSID the same. Once I get done configuring the routers I simply unplug the cable between the two routers and they can't talk to each other anymore. I can't access the net, I can't ping the gateway.

Scanning on my PC I can see both wireless signals, one is listed as local and internet, the other just local.

What am I doing wrong here? ???

Thank you in advance.

Hi

I think what you need is a DAP-1522 (Wireless Bridge) and not a wireless router.

I thought that this router could act as a wireless bridge/access point, which was why I bought it (that and having the USB port for a network printer). was I wrong?

Believe the answer is the 825 can act as a wireless access point switch by connecting via lan cable to another router.  Then wireless clients can connect to the 855 as long as the other router is not acting as DHCP wireless.  Most any wireless router can be set up this way as a switch wired to an existing wired LAN router.  Only one of the two routers can have wireless operating.

That is why when you have the 825 wired to the other router, the 825 can accept LAN wired inputs that connect to the net.

It won't function as a wireless bridge/repeater which is what you are attempting to do.  Most N routers can not be firmware modified to serve this purpose.
