USB copy function erase all my datas !
« on: January 22, 2012, 05:49:34 AM »

Hi,
Huston we have a problem...
I used the "USB COPY" function (pressed around 3s the copy button in the back) to copy all the data from a 500GB NTFS HDD to the NAS. A new EMPTY folder had been created (the two front LED has flicked once) then no more activity (led still on)... After 10min, the new folder was still empty, so I tried to unmount the USB drive by pressing a bit more than 5sec the copy button. The USB light had not been turned off so I've hot-unplugged the usb disk.

If I connect the usb drive on my Win7 or MacOS X, the disk looks empty!  :o 100% freespace, no files!

What should I do ??  ???

Thank you for your help.

Hi, there are settings to determine in which direction the USB >< 325 works.  If it was set incorrectly, it is possible to erase the data on the USB drive you were trying to copy.  If such a mess happened, you might try researching this link, http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41400.0 , to see if you could recover any of the data on the USB drive.  Hopefully, you have a backup.  Good luck

From what I understand, the Linux on DNS-325 is only able to read, not write the NTFS volumes (check the Features on Page 3 of User Manual).
I have very good experience in data recovery with this free tool: TestDisk

Hello,

I don't know if you were able to fix this issue or not, but I faced the same problem and i was able to fix it.

It will sound stupid fix but it worked for me, here is my story. I just got my dns-325 3 days ago. I updated the firmware to V1.0.2 and of course the NAS did a reboot. then I plugged my external USB hard disk and pressed the usb copy button, nothing was copied and all my data (440GB) on the external HDD were erased.

Called Dlink and here comes the stupid solution, the Technical support asked me to power off the NAS, unplug its power cord for 2 minutes then plug it back. As dumb this sounds, but it worked. I have tried the usb copy function 3 times after that and it worked every time.
