Additionally, I've noticed that the HD rarely, if ever, spins down while idle.

I recall having this issue until I turned off all the AV related built-in servers on the device. (I currently do not use them)  Then my drives spun down with no issues.  This might be a good test for you to run though.

I have both a DNS-323 with FW 1.06 and a DNS-321 with FW 1.01 running in the same room with an air temperature of 67F/19C.  Both the 321 and the 323 have their drives in standby and no server services are running on either system.  Both systems contain one WD 500G drive and one WD 1T identical drives.

The 323 shows a temperature of 87F/31C and the 321 shows 109F/43C.  The fan on the 323 is always off and the fan on the 321 cycles on and off, but is off at the present time.

I would not expect to see such differences in temperature between the two units, so there is either a temperature calibration problem, a bad temperature sensor or a software error.  If it is a calibration issue, then the firmware should allow users to set an offset.

Does anyone else out there have two similar units in the same location?

I'm another user with the same issue - DNS-321 doesn't hibernate properly in v1.01. I believe the issue (at least for me) is the upnp server - when it's enabled (even with no connections), the DNS-321 stays active, but when I disable it, it goes into hibernation properly.

Chalk another 321 user who has the same issue.

What a waste of energy!

It would be nice to be able to reset the temperature limits without having to configure an email.

Mainly because getting the email to work is not easy!

Another noob here with this problem. Somewhere on this forum someone posted about "refreshing" the various servers built into DNS-321 to get the fan to shut down. I tried that on the server pages in the configuration web app (those that have a 'refresh' button), and it seems to have allowed the DNS to get some sleep (even tho' I left the itunes and upnp servers enabled). The fan is finally off.... Hope this will be a lasting solution, but I still look forward to a firmware fix.

Well, scratch that .... it worked for a few days but now the fan is back on (despite a temp reading of 37C) and nothing I do seems able to recover the silent bliss I had for a short while. DLINK, please fix this; otherwise my DNS will have to move to the garage ...

I agree...how about a firmware update to address this already.  I am trying to be patient, but this is taking a looooooong time. :)

I've reached the conclusion that _my_ DNS-321 is actually working as advertised. Seems it took a few weeks but now it shuts off whenever the temp reading falls below 44 C, and kicks back in at 45 C. Imagine that!

My temps are usually around 114F and my fan is hardly ever on. There is on occasion when i'm running a backup that it will kick on low. It stays on for a very short amount of time though.
