     I won't go into the longer story of why I wanted to do this, but I offer the hint for anyone who may want to be able to assure access to his home router while the computer is off.
     I wanted a way to stay aware of the IP address of my cable modem, which can change at any time the ISP decides to tweak the system. From home, it's easy on the computer. Or, keep the computer running at all times emailing the current IP. But away from home with no computer is on, it's not quite so easy.
     D-Link's IP cameras to the rescue! We set the cameras (DCS-932L, DCS-930L) to each email just once daily. Then the originating WAN IP can be read in the email's message full header when necessary. This is in addition to ftp images upon motion detection.
     Problem solved!

Another, perhaps simpler method, is enabling scheduled emails from the router itself (if the functionality is available) to deliver event log information. The DIR-857, for example, offers scheduled emails on a weekly/daily or other predefined basis.

    Wow, thanks, I never thought to look in the router!
    Yes my Netgear WNDR3700 can do that too.
    But maybe if traveling the daily camera check-in will be comforting.
