Wireless Packet Loss DIR-655 HELP!!
« on: August 15, 2012, 12:52:16 AM »

My network connection has been acting up lately, and Ive noticed dropped packets with my wireless and random disconnects. I have tried changing wireless channels, looked at the gaming sticky, checked for interference ,and also power cycled the whole thing.

Aside the packet loss, are you experiencing any problems?

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

I'm using mixed mode G and N with AES only also i am the only one on channel 9 at the moment. Have tried the settings and antennas positions you told me to use. The cordless phones I have are DECT 6.0 so they don't interfere with wireless.

Wireless Devices Connected

-Laptop N only.
- Wireless Printer G only.

I haven't seen any difference of packet loss since the settings were changed.Still large amounts of TX and RX packet drops with errors.

I ton you say? Might be encountering WiFi congestion in your area on 2.4Ghz. Were seeing this more and more in heavy populated areas or neighborhoods with a lot of other routers running near by. So theres probably not any tweaking of the router that will help. You could try to lower the power output of the radio on the 655 and see if this might help from High to Medium. The range will decrease if you do this.

One thing you might consider, Getting into a 5Ghz wireless AP and an adapter for your Laptop. This will help you get away from the congested 2.4Ghz radios. Dlink has a couple of 5Ghz DAP models that can work as a AP connected to the DIR-655. You would either turn off the wireless radio on the 655 or switch to Single mode G for your printer and lower the power output to medium or low. Install a DAP device, say a DAP-1525 or 1533 as your 5Ghz AP and connect it to the 655 as the 655 can still be your host router. Connect a DWA-160 which is a 5Ghz USB wireless adapter on the laptop and connect it to the DAP. Sometimes there are internal wireless cards that support 5Ghz. I would check with your Laptop Mfr to see if there is an option. I would consider upgrading to 5Ghz since your area seems to be congested on 2.4Ghz.  :-\

Let us know how it goes.
