DNS-325 AFP/SMB Problems
« on: August 17, 2012, 09:30:39 PM »

This is a long story, so please bear with me. I bought my DNS-325 back in April to use as a backup for my Aperture and iTunes libraries. I got two 3TB Caviar Green WD30EZRX* drives, set them up as RAID1, copied my data over to the DNS, and set up recurring backups with ChronoSync. All was well with the world.

I was using an iMac with OS X 10.7 on it, but recently sold that and replaced it with a MacBook Pro, and have been having issues with it ever since. I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but I haven't been able to mount Volume_1 via AFP in ages, as hitting "Connect to server" and typing the afp://xx.xx.xx.xx presents a login dialog, but then it hangs when I hit submit.

Clicking on the NAS in the sidebar under Shared items works, but seems to connect as an SMB volume. That would be fine, I guess, except I've gotten occasional permissions errors when syncing my iTunes library. I can see that there's data on the drive, I've been able to stream iTunes media, I've been able to connect via FTP, but just not via AFP anymore.

The MacBook Pro shipped with 10.7 on it, but I've since upgraded to 10.8, which hasn't changed things. In any case, I tried connecting via my wife's MacBook with 10.5 on it, and that didn't work either.

I've upgraded the firmware on my DNS to v1.03 (which was how I was able to do iTunes streaming), but I'm still having issues. I feel pretty uneasy, as I haven't been able to complete a successful backup in over a month.

Any direction you guys might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

*Yep, I know these drives aren't on the officially compatible drives list. Didn't realize that until after the fact...

Hi,

Don't worry about the drives. They are in D-Link compatibility list, at least in Europe.
I am using the same NAS in same conf with same drives for over 6 months now.
I have both Lion and Mountain Lion clients, all MacBooks/Pros.
What happens if you change user accounts and permissions on NAS, or create new user and grant him permissions to your existing shares?
Or modify the permissions on existing shares?
If you use user groups, try to discard them and grant rights individually to users.

PS it's really annoying that DNS-325 announces itself solely as SMB server over Bonjour. This can be solved quite easily, one only needs access to NAS's Linux shell, which basically calls for fun_plugging.

Thanks so much for the response. I currently only have one user (and no groups) with read/write permissions on the NAS. I took a closer look, and it seems that some files and folders somehow only have read permissions turned on  the NAS. Is there an easy way to update the permissions on the NAS? Could it simply be to click that "apply permissions to enclosed items" button in the Get Info window? If there's a better way, please let me know.

In the meantime, I've been able to back up my iTunes Library, with the exception of the files that had permissions errors. Next is to try the Aperture library, which is painful, because it's almost a full terabyte of data.

I'll try fun_plugging and see if I can figure out how that works.

Thanks again.

From my experience - whatever I do with file permissions on Mac (doesn't matter Finder or command line), is completely ignored by NAS. Which is also to be expected. Because it maintains it's filesystem (a Linux filesystem!) completely autonomously.
I have not really taken a deep dive in this permissions management for NAS's AFP fileserver (Netatalk), but it looks like a common problem (I see same in my Finder, what about you?):
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=29596
As a matter of fact, it doesn't look much different on Apple's own (AirPort Extreme) network shares either. Go figure.
PS the 2 ways to make permanent file ownership and permission changes on the NAS itself are:
1) in ShareCenter web-interface go to Web File Server app, right-click the file and select Properties (you can only change permissions here but you'll also see the owner)
2) go fun_plug, log in to Linux console on NAS and make changes there. Which obviously might yield more trouble than gain if done wrong or for wrong files.

This is really annoying, because at one point, the NAS used to connect merrily via AFP, and now it doesn't at all. The main problem for me is that I can't open my Aperture libraries that are stored on the NAS, because Aperture complains that the volume has the wrong filesystem. I installed fun_plug, but that didn't do me much good, because I'm not much of a command line guy. I've tried looking around, but haven't quite figured out how to go about enabling AFP via fun_plug. It looks like I need optware? I installed that too, but am not sure what to do next. Any pointers you might have would be very helpful...
