Author Topic: Router won't poll DSL modem after connection drop to try to reconnect  (Read 12629 times)

I upgraded to the DIR-655 from a competing LinkSys product.  So far, I am happy with the performance, except for one feature.

My DSL ISP connection drops VERY FREQUENTLY.  My old router would poll the DSL modem every 180 seconds (I configured that interval) and upon finding the DSL modem had reconected to the ISP, the router would also reconnect my LAN to the WAN.

So far, I cannot get the DIR-655 to do the above process, no matter what settings I use under "Reconnect Mode" of SETUP -> INTERNET options.  I thought "Connect on Demand" might solve the problem, so I waited until I was dropped from ISP, closed everything, then reopened a browser and click www.google.com, but all that I received was a browser error typical of being in offline mode.

I am on MTS in Manitoba, Canada.  If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be appreciated.  I assumed that the router polling the modem (after connection drops) was a fairly standard and routine corrective mode, but now I am not so sure.

Even though you said it before, set Reconnect mode to "Always On" and Maximum Idle Time to zero.

What hardware & firmware revision is your 655?

My firmware is 1.21.  It was factory installed.  My hardware version is A4. I just bought this router two days ago.

One issue seems to be that even after my DSL modem has dropped its connection (and remains disconnected) the router still reports being "connected" on the STATUS - DEVICE INFO screen.  The DSL modem will reconnect to the ISP after a given period of time (maybe two to four minutes), obviously with a new IP address (dynamic IP) assigned by the ISP.

The router isn't detecting that the connection has failed in the first place, and all the while reports being "connected", and still displays the previous IP address.  As as result, I have to manually click "disconnect" button, then "reconnect" button, to connect to the Internet.

I receive the "Please wait... The gateway is currently measuring your network connection.  Accessing this web page might have an effect on the measurement.  This page will refresh shortly. " message.

As of this point, my connection appears to be restored (with the router reflecting the updated IP address assigned by ISP) and I can go on the WAN again.  Why is the router failing to detect the dropped connection (by the DSL modem)?  The router can't reconnect if it still thinks it's connected the whole time! :(

I have similar problem also. I'm working in one local ISP, we are using Motorola Canopy equipment and connection type is PPPoE. When I reboot my SM, router detects lost of connection (because ethernet link goes down) and reconnects regularly. But if I reboot AP, PPPoE connection obviously goes down, but router doesn't detect it.

One of these days all telcos will upgrade to their DSL service to DHCP and end this PPPoE authentication nonsense.

In the meantime, would you be interested in trying the 1.22B5 beta firmware to see if it still happens?

Do not hold your breath!  PPPoE is quite "lucrative" to ISPs as they can trace DSL accesses and charge for accesses past the established monthly "caps."

True, though the more modern way companies account for bandwidth is to track the MAC of the DHCP modem instead of an actual user account.  In some ways it would be more accurate, especially if someone was stealing/borrowing the account user name on another PPPoE device.

ttmcmurry: I will try to install the firmware you suggested today or tomorrow, as time permits.  It is quite frustrating to "accept" that the router reconnect features would not detect the ADSL modem connection to the ISP has been lost.

ttmcmurry: Yes!  Thank you for your suggestion!  The firmware update has corrected the router behaviour as to my description in the original posts.  The router now reconnects once the DSL modem has corrected itself.  Thank you.

Glad to hear it! :)

So others who may have this problem could know, which firmware did you apply?  1.22b05 or 1.30?

I applied 1.22b05.  I never saw the infamous 1.30 before it was pulled. :P  From the sounds of it, I didn't miss much. :)
