Constant Connection Issues - Tried a lot already...
« on: August 17, 2012, 03:07:03 PM »

Here is my hardware: I have a DIR-655 Version B running the stock 2.0 firmware and a Motorola SB6120 cable modem and my ISP is comcast. I have had comcast come out and test my line and everything is fine. I have a desktop directly wired to the internet and several portable devices accessing the router.

Issue: Periodically, I cannot connect to the internet. My network is available and none of my devices ever indicate the network isn't available. When I try to load a website it just says "waiting for reply..." and nothing happens. The solution that always works is rebooting both the modem and the router. What is odd is that this problem comes and goes, I will go a week with zero issues, then I go all week with rebooting my stuff 5-8 times a day...

What have I tried? I tried the settings that are recommended by Furrynuts to users complaining. I have also tried changing the wireless band settings to different channels as well.

I am at my wits end here....dunno if I should bother upgrading the firmware. Any ideas? Thank you.

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
What ISP Speed UP and Down do you pay for?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Set a manual WAN Port speed from Auto to 1000Mb. Advanced/Networking.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

If after all this if you can provide some answers, I would give the FW update a try. v2.03 and v2.07 are good. I have tested both of them.
If you want to update, please follow this:
FW Update Process
And please do not use Chrome for FW updates. Use IE or FF.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Appears they censored my previous reply (come on guys this is a SUPPORT forum and it was a LEGIT reply)...

try a fan to cool the router.  This worked to REDUCE the lockups I had on my 655.  One would conclude it was overheating and failing due to that.

Thanks for the help guys. Sorry about the delay, couldn't get around to monkeying with the router...I tried everything you said FurryNutz finishing up with the 2.07 FM update.

Its difficult to say right now, but everything seems OK. The only weird issue is that my WiFi signal now seems weaker. Here are my wireless settings:

802.11 Mode: Mixed n/g
Enable Auto Channel Scan: unchecked
Wireless Channel: CH 11 (I've got a wireless baby monitor and people report it uses CH 6)
Transmission Rate: Best (automatic)
Channel Width: Auto 20/40mhz

Security Mode: WPA-Personal
WPA Mode: Auto (WPA or WPA2)
Cipher Type: TKIP and AES
Group Key Interval: 3600

All these settings are the same as before I updated the firmware, now post update things seem sluggish the further I get from the router.

Try changing to Single mode G just to test for a while, is the single better on G only?

Just an update, things got worse, 8-10 reboots a day and finally my computer directly connected could no longer connect. Grabbed a Netgear from Best Buy to see if it was the router and it was the router. This Netgear smokes the 655. Sorry D-Link, but never again. My DIR-655 was less than a year old and it crapped out. Thanks for the help here though guys. D-Link you lost a customer with your shoddy product, at least your forum help is good.

This router is a good router. It could just need to be RMAd. I would recommend checking out RMA or having someone else check it out on a different system to see if the problem follows.
