Author Topic: DIR-655 Sometimes not serving pages on wired connection after firmware upgrade  (Read 5942 times)

Hey guys,

I recently upgraded my DIR-655 to firmware version 2.10NA , 17, Oct, 2012.

Ever since the upgrade, on a wired connection the router will occasionally not serve pages.  This shows up as a DNS error, stating the DNS lookup failed.  If I wait a bit and reload the page, it will sometimes resolve itself.  If I bypass the router and plug directly into the modem, the problem goes away completely.

This is happening on my MacBook Pro, OS X 10.7.5, any browser (I use Chrome mostly, but also Safari and Firefox have the same issue).  This is not happening on my Linux laptop which I use wirelessly, or my iPhone or any of my wireless clients, though the same MacBook occasionally has trouble connecting if I DO try to use it wirelessly (I receive a connection timeout and cannot log on).  I'm not certain at this point if the trouble is with the router or the computer, but it only began happening (and happened immediately) after I installed the most recent firmware.

My security setup, if for any reason it matters, is WPA2 with MAC address filtering.

I've done a lot of searching, but haven't found anyone with this problem.

Has anyone seen anything like this?  Is there more information I could provide to help diagnose the issue?

Thanks in advance.

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

Has a Factory Reset been performed before and after the FW update? Was this happening before the FW update? What was the reason for updating?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.

Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set Time and Time Zone under Tools/Time.

I had this same version loaded for a time on my 655 and didn't see this issue on my Mac Book Pro OSX 10.6 and 10.8. I use Safari, FF and Opera. There is a bug on this version with Guest Zone.

I have used my new DIR-655 with firmware version2.10NA Rev B1 all day without any problems serving pages, being connected with a wired connection. So we have at least one router working. Hope this helps.
I have not tried the guest zone as there is a reported problem. I will wait till it is fixed.

Hi Furry,

One of your suggestions seems (so far) to have solved the problem, but just for clarification, here's all the information you requested:

  • Hardware version: B1
  • Firmware version: 2.10NA , 17, Oct, 2012
  • I'm located in AZ, US.
  • A factory reset was performed after firmware update, settings restored with exported file created prior to upgrade.  I don't recall if I performed a reset before, but I think I did so after the settings were exported.
  • My ISP is HughesNet Satellite (I'm out in the middle of nowhere in the desert)
  • My modem is the HughesNet HT1000, it does not have a built-in router.

The first suggestion on your list seems to have solved the problem.  I disabled all QoS and so far the problem has not recurred.  This is not a feature I need, so that's great if it solves it.  Could you possibly shed some light on how this could have affected things?  Was the router possibly prioritizing some background traffic (say, Spotify, for instance) and therefore not serving pages as they were requested?  I'm not sure how it determines what traffic is to be prioritized.

coxhaus, glad to hear you are operating fine with this firmware!

I'll post again if the issue returns, but so far so good.  Thanks so much for the quick response and great suggestions!

What was the prior version loaded before updating to v2.10? If it's older than say 2.07 I would do a factory reset and NOT load the saved configuration file. Some items could have changed since before then and any older items in the saved configuration file applied to newer FW could cause some problems. Seem this before. I recommend always to factory reset routers before then after the update is applied to get a good setting of the newer FW. Then set up the router from scratch and test for normal operation and stability. If it's good then, maybe apply the saved configuration file and test more.

As for QoS, what is your ISP Speed UP and down?
Since your ISP is SAT, could be that your ISP has other means for data flow and QoS since SAT may have and still cause a delay in propagation. I had SAT about 10 Years ago, StarBand. Was good at the time and for what it was since DSL and Cable were not available at the time. We only had dialup here.  ::) SAT has some delay in sending and receiving however I hope maybe they might have improved this over time. Not sure. Your ISP might have some other ways of data flow and how it all works with there system. I presume if you don't have alot of people connecting to your 655 or do any major gaming or streaming, leaving QoS OFF should be ok for you.

Be aware that there is a bug on this verion we've found that deals with Guest Zone. I had this version on my 655 and it ran fine for me until a user posted info about Guest Zone. Verified this with v2.10 and the downgraded to v2.07 to see if the bug was there and it's NOT. From the short time I had v2.10 on my 655, it seemed to work well after updating.

Keep us posted.
