Hi I was wondering if it is even possible for DNS-323 to support hard disks larger than 2TB each? I notice that even newer NAS like the DNS-343 also only support up to 2TB HDs each. So I was wandering if there a hardware reason for this limitation or perhaps is it just software and therefore it is possible that later can support HDs with capacity larger than 2TBs.

Hi JavaLawyer and thanks for the reply but I have already read this article. My question is however if it is even possible at some point (through software upgrade) for the NAS to support even larger HDs. Is this possible?

I highly doubt that D-Link will offer a 3TB option for the DNS-323. D-Link phased out the DNS-323 in favor of the DNS-320, which itself was recently replaced by the DNS-320L. As far as new development is concerned, it looks as though D-Link is focusing all its energy on supporting new models.

Ok thanks a lot JavaLawyer. They way I understand it now is that there is no hardware reason for the 2TBs limit and therefore other NAS like the DNS-343 can support in the future larger than 2TBs HDs each, correct?

I explain the fundamental reason why HDDs greater than 2TB are not supported by older devices (such as the DNS-323) in this FAQ post: ShareCenter - AFT (Advanced Format Technology) Hard Drive Support. The DNS-323 definitely has software limitations preventing support for HDDS greater than 2TB, but I cannot comment on whether or not this limitation also extends to hardware.

Hardware wise, any 3.5" SATA hard disk drive can be used - the software is where the limitations and/or incompatabilities exist.
