Hi,

I just ordered my unit, and am anxiously awaiting it's arrival. In preparation i've pulled down all the docs, 1.07 firmware, and Windows drivers. After a quick review of the release notes and docs it seems like this thing is really easy to install and use. Even so, i see quite a bit of discussion here in the forums so i gather there are some tricks that folks have learned over the years.

My intended usage of the device will be a B2D target for EMC Retrospect. The unit will be hosting 2 Seagate ST3750640NS 750GB HDD's in a R1 config, which appears to be a certified HDD. The server that is going to write to it is running W2K8 Std x32, and my entire network is Gigabit. I may mount the data to a Vista Ultimate X64 machine, and then offsite to Mozy, but i'm not sure i want to do that after reading some of the posts here about Vista.

Anyone have any suggestions of things i need to consider before i start loading this thing up with data?

My 2cents.... don't Install the Windows Drivers.....
You don't need them for normal operation of the 323

They will only give you a "nicer" icon and Vista will list some "extra" info for the 323

A lot of people here had issues when they installed the drivers....
They would get a BSOD when computer goes on standby....

i was wondering about that. i'd rather just mount the share via windows like i do the rest of my NAS devices, and it sounds like that will work here.

vista is buggy enough as it is, so i don't need to tempt fate!

I agree do not install the driver (not really needed at all.)
I would not use the DNS-323 as a main data store I would use it as a backup device only.
If you use the DNS-232 and a main data store have a backup elsewhere.
Just take note that RAID 1 is not a backup it's only redundancy and should be treated as such.

that is exactly what i plan on doing.

i'll have my production NAS server (which does snapshots, defrag, etc.) doing all the heavy lifting. that unit is already mirrored in a R1 to protect the data.

i will then use the 323 to all my b2d to, and it will be in a R1 not because i'm using it as primary storage but rather to protect that data from HDD failure.

the final piece will be mounting the 323 data to another machine for off site data storage, but i need to get past phase 2 1st.
