Hello all,

I'm new to the forum, i hope all is well with everyone.
I've been using a Dlink 655 (A2) in WEP mode for over two years now without any issues.
A little less than a year ago i updated the firmware to 1.35NA going good so far.
All that time i have been using mixed mode B,G and N due to the older laptops i was using (wirelessly), i also have two desktops (hardwired) one running XP the other Vista no problem with those.
I've replaced the laptops and are running fine in the mixed mode since.
I decided to try the N mode because the new laptops are running windows 7.
Here is where it gets interesting, the router now in N mode with WPA2 enabled when i turn on the Vista desktop it knocks out the wifi on one of the new laptops (HP with Ralink RT3090 b, g and n adapter).
When turn off the vista pc, the wifi reconnects again.
I've tried a few troubleshooting steps, manually set channel, cipher type, adavanced DNS on/off and WISH etc.....
I get a feeling its not an issue with the network adapters of the pc and laptop themselves because they all been working flawlessly in mixed mode for over a year and a half.
Has anyone else had a similar issue like this, any resolutions or other things i can try would be greatly appreciated it.

Try mixed G and N?

Do all the newer Laptops support G and or N modes? Does this happen if you try with single mode N?

Yes, the newer laptops support G,N.
Yeah, i'm trying N mode only but this is when the issue happens.
I've tried N and G mode as well.

The only time I have seen something similar was when a NIC went bad and started flooding the network with garbage.

What band width is the router currently set on? Try 20Mhz only then try Auto 20/40Mhz. Try these with Mixed G and N with WPA2 and TPIK only, then try AES only or Auto TPIK/AES.

Hey,

After trying all kinds of different combinations with Channel Width, 802.11 Mode, WPA Mode, and Cipher Type.
I have come up with a combo that works good so far, this is what works for me,
802.11 Mode = Mixed G & N
Ch Width = Auto 20/40 Mhz
WPA Mode = Doesn't matter
Cipher Type = Laptops will ONLY stay connected with TKIP (so no N mode)!!

I have determined that the issue is cipher type AES, no matter what other settings i change.
As soon as i change from TKIP to AES the laptops disconnect. If i change back to TKIP they reconnect again.

its just too bad you can't switch to N because of the AES, since N mode doesn't support TKIP.
Its like having your cake and not being able to eat it!!

So much for "N mode".....

Just for note. If you have an N router and run anything other then WPA2-AES your router will only run in G mode at 54Mbps. TKIP can only run at 54Mbps. That's why it is stated everywhere that if you truly want N speeds you have to have WPA2-AES as your security. Just my 2 cents.

Glad you found something that works for you.

Will the LTs stay connected if you use Auto TPIK/AES? Or is it TPIK only? Auto should work thus allowing for N mode.

Other solution would be to upgrade those LTs that don't support AES to adatpers that support AES. You could install some D-Link model DWA-160 USB adapters. Another option would be to install a D-Link DAP model AP and LAN wire connect those devices to the DAP. The DAP would in turn be a Bridge to the DIR-655. For mobility, the DWA adapters would be best.

Possible that Rev As didn't work with Auto Cipher well maybe. I'm doubting this. Seems that maybe some of your devices don't support AES however the router should be able to handle usnig both at the same time.

When you updated to v1.35 did you perform a factory reset after the update or left everything alone? You might try a factory reset and then manually set up the router from scratch using Mixed G and N and Auto TPIK and AES. It should work

Sm00thpapa, i read ya but that's what i'm trying to do, but when i set it to N only and AES thats when the laptops disconnect.
FurryNutz, when "N only" is set i can ONLY choose AES, not auto tkip/aes or tkip.
I looked up the details of both laptops and it says they both support AES so i don't understand why they disconnect when router is set to n only & aes mode?!?!?

When i did the firmware upgrade i did NOT do a factory reset afterwards, i just put back the config file back and let it run.
FurryNutz, do you really think if i do a factory reset now would it fix anything?

IT's worth a try, going from 1.2x to 1.35 is a major change and probably needs to be set up from scratch and test.

Hey FurryNutz!!

I did do a factory reset and i piped in all the info manually, it didn't work..... 
But, after more troubleshooting and poking around the nic properties
I freeking finally figured out the reason why the laptops would disconnect when i turned on the Vista tower, you ready for it??  wait for it.......wait for it.........in the nic properties i unchecked TCP/IPv6!
I would have never thought this feature would ever cause an issue like this!!?!!
Anyway, after doing that i kept the network page open on both laptops, and two hours later they we're still connected.
During this time i was using the web on both LTs and even transferring hugh files between them and its been working like a charm!!!!! Who would have thought huh!!

Just to test, i enabled the TCP/IPv6 on the tower and bam! the LTs disconnect like clockwork!

So, if anyone is having a similar issue like this i would definitely say try to disable/enable this feature and see what you get.

At least now i can have my cake and eat too!!  : )

Wow, how interesting. I heard that Vista has causes some problems in the past with IPv6. Good find man.

Sounds like if your not using IPv6, I would keep it disabled for now.
