can't connect to certain sites
« on: December 03, 2012, 01:36:22 AM »

Hi,
I have dir655
Hardware Version: B1   Firmware Version: 2.10NA

comcast motorola cable modem surfboard SB5101.

The problem started happening a couple of days ago. When my computer is hooked up to the cable model directly, i am able to connect to outlook.com just fine but when i go through my router, it can't connect to the site.
I played with MTU (lower it by 10) all the way to 1300 but it didn't work.
The problem started happening all the sudden without any changes in the cable modem, router or my computer.

I also tried cloning MAC address from my pc but didn't help.
I also tried turn off both modem and router, wait 2 minutes, start modem, wait for all lights to come up and start the router.

Sites i can't connect are: outlook.com, starcraft2, comcast, ebay, facebook....
One thing that i noticed weird is that i am able to connect to cnn.com using IE9 just fine but ping shows:

Pinging cnn.com [157.166.226.25] with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 157.166.226.25:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

I live in Kirkland, WA. Using Windows 7 if that is useful...

HI let me try to help you..

can you log into your router setup page and check your primary DNS? its on the status tab under WAN
if your primary DNS would be like this: 204.194.232.200, then you go to Setup>Manual Internet Connection setup and un-check Enable Advanced DNS Service. i hope that works.

Link>Welcome!

Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500 only, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.

Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

Please review this to see if you are affected by it:
Comcast Customers DNS Issues

Does this happen with other browsers like Opera or FF?

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I don't feel comfortable with remote assistance :)

Any other suggestions? thanks

Keep MTU at 1500.

When you change the modem form being connected straight to the PC and connecting back to router, make sure you power cycle the modem so that the device its newly attached to it gets a proper IP address from your ISP.

ok so i got it fixed. i had to revert Windows update from last Saturday and everything works.
It is still puzzling that why Windows update would affect my router to stop working on certain sites.
The problem was happening on another laptop that is connected wirelessly when my computer was turned off....

Can you find out which update it might be? Really those should not effect router operation.

I would also check to see if ALL network adapter drivers are up to date as well.
Review the ComCast info to make sure you are not effected by it while you have access.

Glad you found a fix though.
