DIR-615 B2 performance dropped after new internet.
« on: June 10, 2012, 09:56:26 AM »

Despite all the drama regarding the DIR-615, I've had the B2 revision since around late 2008 or early 2009 (can't remember exactly, most likely late 2008) and it had been working flawlessly. And I do mean that. I never once had a problem with this router and highly recommended it. Back then I was on a 24/1 connection, and had been up until recently.

Now I'm on a 100/10 line, and things haven't been looking too great. The internet is stable for the most part, and I am getting full speed, but the router has been starting to drop its connection a lot. I've had to release -> renew (or simply restart the router) quite often now and it seems to be happening at complete random.

Is there any way I can figure out what's going wrong? Any advice? I've tried searching for answers, tweaking with settings, updating firmware, etc but no luck. All connections in question are of course wired, not wireless.

This may sound silly but the other day the fuse thats hooked up to the living room and another room where the router is connected ended up going out. A few days prior to this the lights used to flicker a bit, but ever since I changed the fuse the living room lighting hasn't flickered and the router has been completely stable.

Hope this solves my problem.

and if anyone even thinks of dissing the DIR-615 they better leave out the B2, it's been serving me flawlessly since day 1! :]

Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Meh, it's been happening again lately. Have to restart the router. Basically what happens is the router stops responding (can't access it through 192.168.0.1) and I have to re-plug it.

Some of the info you requested @FurryNutz:

Firmware Version: 2.25
100/10 Fibre Optic
Modem doesn't have a built in router
QoS, Advanced DNS, and all that is off.
I've always had uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming off, was never an issue before.

The problem happens with the router itself, I have a wireless device or two hooked up but the computers are all connected through LAN cables. I've played with the wireless settings and nothing has helped. Again, the router will work 100% fine until it suddenly stops functioning (then I have to restart it).

Should probably open the router up and take a look inside...dust build up or something causing it to overheat? I don't know. It'll happen during random times too, ranging from just browsing a site to playing multiplayer games.

What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8 or 9, set compatibility mode and test again.

Turn off the WiFi radio and test with out the radio on. DOES the router Hang with it OFF?

What is the ISP required MTU value for your modem? Might check that. I know that Cable is usually 1500, DSL is 1400s depending on each DSL provider. I would ask to see if Fiber provider has any such values that maybe needed. Unless you have the router in a hight dust area, shouldn't be an issue however maybe using a can of AIR thru some of the vent holes might help.

Is all 3rd party security SW on PC temporarily disabled when then happens? Might test with that OFF and see. Firewalls are not needed on PCs with SPI enabled on the Router.

I might also factory reset the router and set it up from scratch. Set up the WiFI SSID, use single mode G or N or mixed G and N.

Reserve IP addresses for ALL devices on the router, not on the devices. Keep them set to automatic.

Keep us posted.
