I started with a 323 years ago and liked it, it still works but I retired it.  I upgraded and I'm still using a 325.  Only complaint that I have is around transfer rate.  I mainly use my NAS to backup pictures and movies of the kids.  The movies are video clips from various cameras I've had over the years.  Now they are up to 1080p so the files sizes just get bigger.

I have two 2T hard drives and they are about 1/3 full.  I don't use raid (raid is not for backup), instead I sync the two drives.  About every six mouths I swap out one drive with a 3rd spare 2T drive (don't need the speech about swapping and wearing out the connectors, I'll take the chance).

I've read that the write transfer rates are a little slow on the 345, that doesn't bother me so much, as I normally download pictures and movies about once a month and once it's done it's done.  The read speed is important.

How does the 345 compare to the 325 in read speed? Is it worth the upgrade?

I will not be using raid and the daily backups will be done from hard drive to hard drive within the unit.  Don't necessarily need 4 drive bays but as I fill up drives it wouldn't hurt to have the additional slots.  I still have my 500G from my 323 that I keep for additional backups (kids earliest pictures and movies that I wouldn't want to misplace).  I'm still not convinced of Icloud and the amazon backup solutions.  I have other tax documents, etc.  that I don't want out on the WEB.

I can't speak specifically to the transfer speed difference between the two units, as this depends on many variables, but would like to point out that the DNS-345 has a wealth of additional functionality and hardware improvements. The DNS-345 has two Ethernet ports; supports audio streaming over the Internet; and ability to export data as an ISO image, to name a few things. I recommend downloading and reading through the DNS-345 manual to get a better feel for the product and aid in your decision-making.

The DNS-325 and DNS-345 reviews published by"FOXNETWORK" in the two links below contain throughput metrics for both devices. Since these reviews were both compiled by the same publisher, the metrics should provide the apples-to-apples comparison you are looking for.

Did dlink ever fix the local backup file date issue?  On the 325 if you scheduled a local backup, the file date would be the date it was copied, not the original file date.  This always forced me to install fun plug just so I could use rsync and get correct file date (this is important when keeping track of when pictures where taken).  Also if I deleted a file rsync can also delete on the backup as well.  Don't know why the don't use rsync for local backups.
I haven't updated my 325 firmware in awhile so perhaps this issue has been fixed.

I'm not sure if that issue was addressed on the DNS-325, perhaps someone else can chime in. I can say that the issue you are referring to dates back to the legacy ShareCenter models, including the DNS-321/323/343.

You are correct, the file date is now retained, must not have tried it when I went from the 323 to the 325 or one of the firmware updates must have fixed it.  I did several tests, however, if I delete a file it is still in the backup drive.  Would be nice to have the option to delete folders and files on the backup if they were also deleted on the original.  Rsync gives the option to completely sync the drives which is what I do with my photos & movies.

I do like the dlink products, seems they do develop the products.  Thanks for the reply, I also have a friend that wanted a backup system but trying to explain fun-plug to him would have taken some work.  Now he can just use the local scheduler.
