Need help with a multi DIR-655 DLNA Setup...
« on: December 01, 2012, 05:30:45 PM »

I am using two DIR-655 routers on a LAN, the same subnet, and the same wireless SSID. One does DHCP, and the other one does not. I'll call them Router1 and Router2. I am having problems getting UPnP/DLNA to work properly through Router2. Everything else is working great, including DLNA on Router1, the single shared SSID, internet access, etc.

I am wondering if someone can give me the exact setup I need for both routers to get a consistent DLNA experience through Router2.

Components:

- 2x DIR-655 Routers (Hardware Version: B1, Firmware Version: 2.07NA)
- Gigabit Switch
- Windows 7 Box
- PlayStation 3

Network Setup:

Router1 is in the back of the house (server room) with the WAN port wired into the cable modem and a LAN port wired to a Windows 7 box. Another LAN port on Router1 goes to a switch in the front of the house (TV room) through the attic. The PlayStation is also wired to this switch (I use PS3 Media Server on the Windows 7 box to stream HD content to the PlayStation... it's cabled so I don't have to worry about wireless interruptions). DLNA between the Windows box and the PlayStation works great through Router1.

I am using a switch in the TV room because it is also connected to Router2's LAN port. This way, most of our devices just pick up the stronger wireless signal, and browsing the internet is fast everywhere. So far everything works great. The routers are at 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 and use the same SSID (but different channels).

The problem is that when you connect (usually over wireless) to the LAN via Router2, DLNA does NOT work, and the server does not show up when scanning the network with a DLNA client.

Here are the DIR-655 settings I have tried on Router2:
(no combination gets DLNA working through Router2)

- WAN Port: Not Used
- DHCP: OFF
- UPnP: ON and OFF (no change)
- Enable Multicast Streams: ON and OFF (no change)
- Enable IPv6 Multicast Streams: ON and OFF (no change)
- Enable Traffic Shaping: ON and OFF (no change)
- Enable SPI: ON and OFF  (no change)

Could someone please give me a list of all the correct settings for both routers so they will play nice together... i.e. - to get DLNA working over wireless through Router2.

A sincere thank you for anyone willing to help me with this config...

I would review this and see if it might help:
Turning a router into an AP.

Not sure if DLNA on any router is dependent upon a WAN connection or solely assigned to connections on router1. I don't think so however I haven't tried it in this configuration and may not be supported. I your using router2 features, you'll need to turn them ALL off including any DLNA options and SPI. ALL options should be disabled or turned OFF accept for WiFi on router 2. If router 2 is configured correctly and connected LAN 2 LAN with router 1, it should pass any DLNA information from router 1 I believe. I recommend using 192.168.0.50 as a IP address for router 2 if running in AP mode. I have multiples here and use the .50 range for them. By deffault, most DAP model units IP addresses are .50.

I would also bypass any switches while testing and directly connect router 1 to router 2 and test to make sure the switches are not interfering by chance.

Let us know...

Thanks Dr. Nutz,

The AP instructions are what I originally followed, and that works great for everything except DLNA.

I've been through the settings on both routers a dozen times, and there are a few things I'm confused on:

Is the 'DNS Relay' setting relevant? Does it matter? Should it be disabled on Router2?

Do PPTP, IPSec (VPN), RTSP, SIP matter if SPI on Router2 is OFF?

Thanks again,
Thomas

All those can be disabled however shouldn't matter as I think so features are WAN dependent connections.

You maybe running into a situation where DLNA isn't supported in this configuration.

I recommend that you test a wired connection from router 1 to a remote device or put in place a external GB switch in place of router 2 and see if you get DLNA at your remote device and test to see what happens.

I got DLNA working on both routers...

I'm happy to post all my settings if anyone is interested.

Thanks again FurryNutz.

Here's my current configuration, that gives me seamless WiFi coverage and working DLNA. Thanks to FurryNutz for his assistance.

Hope it helps :)

NOTES:

- I use the DHCP reservations list to give all devices static IP's, but DHCP is enabled for quest devices.
- I use WiFi Analyzer on Android to determine the best channel for each of the AP's (shows channel quality with neighbors APs, etc.).
- Remember the channels need to be different on the two routers.
- The WiFi settings have the same security and the same Pre-Shared Key, they are identical (except for the channel).
- Any virtual server, port forwarding, application rule, etc. should be done on Router #1.
- Don't use Router #2 for anything other than WiFi.
- If the setting isn't listed below, it set at the default value.
