Xbox Live Hard Wire Issues
« on: December 16, 2012, 06:42:07 PM »

Hey there,

I have my Xbox hard wired to my laptop, which has connection sharing enabled.  This has worked with other routers to allow me to connect to XBL.  However, I simply can't get this to work with the DIR-825. I have tried the steps outlined in FurryNutz' QOS Engine thread (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42011.0) but my Xbox doesn't appear in the DHCP client list anyhow.  I'm completely stumped.

You need to directly wire the xbox to the DIR-825 then it should work. You should not be connecting to the LT and sharing the connection thru there as the DIR-825 has 4 LAN ports to connect devices too.

I know, and at home I hard wire to my router because it is in my room,  but I'm at my parents' for the holidays, and the router is nowhere near a television.  The laptop method has worked in the past,  but with other routers

Which xbox do you have? The slim or 1st gen xbox? If slim then you could use the on board Wifi to connect directly to the 825. If you have the old generation, then get a MS 2.4/Ghz USB WiFi adapter or get you a DLink model DAP that you can make in to a bridge. Then you can directly connect to the DAP in bridge mode and the DAP will connect to the 825.
Review this:
Bridge Mode vs Relay vs Acess Point (AP) / Routers vs Dedicated Access Points (AP)

Also, What ISP is the 825 connected too? DSL or Cable?
What ISP make and model is the modem?
This is important as well.

There could be something on the LT that is impeding the connection with the xbox. Turn off ALL 3rd party security like Firewalls and Anti Virus programs.

I disabled the Windows Firewall and AVG Free Edition, to no avail.  The Xbox still isn't getting through.  The ISP is AT&T U-Verse, via a Pace America 3801HGV Router.

And I have the 1st Gen Xbox

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Yeah apparently the modem does indeed broadcast wirelessly, making my parents' router redundant.  I'm starting to think the issue is on U-Verse's end, not on D-Link's. Thanks for the help!

I would try to connect with the ISP modem if you can, put your LT in the DMZ on the MODEM. I would not connect with the 825.

A preferred method to using the 825 fully would be to Bridge the ISP modem, however some U-Verse modems can't be. I this case, you can try to put the 825 in the Modems DMZ. Then the 825 should get all connections with out any modem interferences processing. Disable or Turn OFF the WiFi on the Modem. This is again, a preferred method.

Good luck.
