Disks won't spin down since 1.07 update
« on: May 04, 2009, 06:52:20 PM »

I have the dreaded Hitachi 7k1000 hard drives in my DNS-323, so I updated to the 1.07 firmware.  Thought everything was OK at first, but noticed that the drives make a seeking noise every few minutes, whether they're active/in use or not.  It seems like they never spin down.  Anyone else have this problem?

If you can hear the drives "seeking" then something is accessing them - either an external process, via the network or an internal process.

Start by disconnecting the network cable - if this allows it to hibernate, it's an external process, follow it up by check the internal servers - ftp, uPnP, iTunes, etc.

I had a similar situation when I went from 1.05 to 1.06, and it turned out to be one of the internal server processes - there was no repeat when I went to 1.07

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.
