Windows 7 always loses connection to DNS-320
« on: January 20, 2013, 02:44:04 PM »

Hi all,

Getting on great with this NAS except one niggle. Windows 7 PCs (I have multiple) on my network often lose connection to the NAS. This happens when I either use a mapped network drive, or the full share name e.g. \\NAS\Volume_1 - even though I have mapped the network drive to be persistent.

I have told Windows to save the credentials, which it does - I have verified this via "control userpasswords2" control panel applet which shows the stored credentials. All the time the PC is awake during one session it seems to be able to access the NAS, either via share name or mapped network drive. As soon as it is hibernated or put to sleep, when it wakes up it behaves as though it can't connect to the NAS any more, even though it has the correct credentials saved. It keeps prompting me for the username and password, which I re-type and this fixes the problem every time.

It's worth pointing out that I have turned off the NAS's power saving option to hibernate the disks, as I thought this was contributing to the problem. It seems not. I have also tried setting up multiple accounts  on the NAS for multiple PCs - I thought maybe there was a limit to how many connections you can make under one user account, but it seems this is not the case either.

It definitely seems to be to do with the fact that the connecting PC has been put to sleep or into hibernate mode rather than being logged out or restarted. I don't want to have to log out or restart Windows every single time I'm done though! It's not just one PC either - it happens on several. I have the same habits on each though - I always tend to either use sleep or hibernate at the end of the day.

I don't know about anyone else but since we don't use windows I haven't seen it ;)

There is one comment I can make, when you put windows into sleep or hibernate mode it shuts down to things like the network.  When that happens the NAS drops the connection, as it should, and when you wakeup the PC you have to re-establish the NAS connections.

Maybe you need to write a small script, that will run when windows starts up again, to do the reconnection to the NAS.  I have such scripts on our OS/2 servers and workstations.

Thanks - I think you're right, it's simply whenever the device goes to sleep or hibernates, so I'll need a login script to re-attach it.

Thanks for your help!
